The power of the written word: Taking a blog to the NEXT level.

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

From basic information to the power of the written word: Taking a blog to the NEXT level by Richard WeisserBlogs provide a wonderful conduit for the free flow of information. As a blog is populated with content it can also become a significant archive of accumulated knowledge.

But I look at my blog as more than an assemblage of indexed data. I would actually go so far as to consider myself to be a writer.

I was recently asked at a deposition if I had ever “written” anything. I responded that I had written a blog post every day for over four years, and that over 250 of them (at that time) were nationally featured.

The attorney leaned forwarded and pressed with something along the lines of: “Have you ever REALLY written anything?”

The question stung like a bee. I have honed my craft over the years and consider myself to be quite accomplished in both the written word and the art of photography. I have merged the two disciplines into a daily musing that I consider worthy of authorship.

Perhaps I have deluded myself. But I am of the belief that words are powerful, and when properly used go beyond the simple delivery of information.

Words, when properly ordered, can evoke passion, emotion, and empathy.

The crucible of publishing refines and the results are assayed by the reader’s response.

If this isn’t writing, I don’t know what is.

Chris Ann...

That is very nice for you to say that! Thanks so much.

Wayne...

I guess that's SOP for doing business! Thanks!

Mark...

That's why I added the "nationally featured" phrase. I though that would cover it. THX,

Richard,

The attorney is a jerk. Your writing is excellent and so are your poems.

Blogging is most definately writing, although some bloggers are better writers than others (you would be one of those better writers). Anyone who puts his ideas and information down in writing is a writer.

Of course you've "written" something. That's a lot of blogs. The thing that separates you from someone writing a story or a book is that you get feedback and can actually talk things out. Unlike the attorney who's just there trying to discredit you.

Richard I don't have a fancy law degree but I would consider you to be a writer.   Of course the attorney was just doing his job, no matter how distastefull it is.  I guess someone has got to do it.

The attorney was doing his job...trying to discredit you. I could think of quite a few response to him.

We are very proud of your blogging, your writing, your ideas, your professionalism, your photography and your willingness to always share your insight with us.

Please continue to do what you are doing.

Sounds like that Attorney was living under a rock for the past 10 years. There is probably more publishing done online than in print nowadays, and blogging is a large and important part of that.

Richard-

While I'm with you on this, I could possibly see his, or many people's similar, opinion as well. Anyone these days can easily have a blog, and they do, and just because they may write 24/7/365 doesn't necessarily provide any credibility or talent as a "writer." A quick glimpse around the web illustrates that too well.

It sounds like the lawyer has a problem with tact and should have been more specific with his queston. As an attorney, he especially should practice that art. That was a totally offensive way to arrive an answer that he would consider satisfactory. But no one has ever accurately described attorneys of being a tactful group.

Don't let the bastards get you down, as they say. Thanks for sharing!

Michael

Great post Richard, you are a good writer!   This attorney seems a bit different than most that I have met a depositions, those that I have met seem to want everything that I have ever written no matter how mundane in an effort to find something wrong with my appraisals.

Richard:

The attorney was only doing his job.  That is to discredit you as an expert witness.  Others who think writing post every day of the year is writing do not know the effort and research we pour into our posts.

Richard, consider the source. My experience is attorneys love to put others down. You are an accomplished writer, blogger and photographer. Some people just don't know the internet exists.

Good Morning Richard, I've no doubt that you responded with something very appropriate.  Maybe next time the attorney will take a minute and google the witness before attempting to question them.

Richard, it's so funny how people's viewpoints of "writing" can be so skewed. Just because something isn't formally published doesn't make you any less of a writer. Authors have made whole books out of the blogs that they have written and posted online and compiled them into a cohesive, written masterpiece. You ARE a writer, and the impact that blogs can have on the general public is worthwhile. Your benefits that you receive from your blog will speak for itself. You don't need the approval of anyone else or the confirmation from anyone else to know that you are a writer, and that your blog is your written work.
