Those of us who live in the Sacramento area know that any festival or event at which Mumbo Gumbo will be playing is worth attending. They are our own local homegrown band with a fan base that extends way beyond our neck of the woods.
I first got to know them several years ago when they played at the Fair Oaks Spring Fest. We were dancing in the street to their great mix of zydeco, rock, some country influences, boogie, and who knows what all. somehow it all goes together into their own distinctive style.
Since then I have been to many of their appearances and have turned a number of folks onto them, including my husband Jon. They are a lot of fun and very friendly folk. There are seven in the band and they've been together for 20 years. You can tell they love what they do, and that's another reason why the audience always loves them.
The two front singers, Chris Webster and Tracy Walton, also write some great songs, but the band also plays covers when asked. The rest of the band is Jon Wood on guitar, Steve Stizzo on keyboards, Rick Lotter on drums, Lynn Michael Palmer on bass and Reggy Marks on sax. You will also see the use of unorthodox instruments like a washboard.
Their music has been heard in TV shows and at least one movie, they have several albums out, and are well known, but they manage to spend a good deal of their time playing here at home in the Sacramento area, for which I'm grateful. Can you tell I'm a big fan?
here is a sampling of the kind of stuff they do. It's a piece of several of their songs. You can find a lot more of their stuff on You Tube - check them out!

This weekend they will be appearing in Isleton (at the Lousiana style Cajun festival) and in Tahoe City at the floating boat party at Tahoe Gal (a fun event that includes a flotilla of boats gathering to hear the music), and next weekend they'll be at Sierra City in the Kentucky Mine and Museum amphitheater (nestled in the trees and followed by a BBQ), then back to Sacramento on July 11th, when they'll be playing at Fairytale Town, 3901 Land Park Drive.
This is a great outdoor setting with a wonderful stage, shady seating on the grass, and a wonderful fun time for the entire family. If you haven't taken your kids to Fairytale Town, this would be a great time. It's a wonderful and exciting place for kids to feel they are a part of the stories, but this time there will be fun, danceable music too!
