pepper plants

The dog days of Summer are upon us in Southern California. The term "dog days" was a term coined by the Romans who believed that Sirius (the dog star) was responsible for hot days if the star rose before or at sunrise.  They event went as far as  sacrificing a brown dog to appease the rage of Sirius.  It is a good thing we know about equinoxes today.

We have heat waves up and down the state, and even with our proximity to the ocean some parts of Santa Barbara County will top the 100 degree mark.  We loved these bright pepper plants, and they are hot according to the grower. Hot foods are traditionally eaten in hot times to encourage sweating to cool the body.

Wishing you a delightful Saturday, Cheers, Ron & Alexandra

I always enjoy your photographs.  Keep cool during the Dog Days of summer.

Have an outstanding weekend.  Dolores and I spent the morning at a Maryland Peach Festival.  We have another beautiful summer day.

Black-eyed Susan is the Maryland state flower...

Alexandra, can feel my mouth burning just looking at that photo!! ;) Always wondered about those dog days. We have just been cooled off by two days of rain after our 90 degree days!

The hotter it gets the more I am wanting a chili dish to cool the spirit.  Ironically of late we've been enjoying the low end of the extreme temperatures around the country.  It's not often you hear, "Come to Florida to cool off!"

Hi Alexandra, I love what these peppers look like and your photo is great. As for ating them, that is a whole other matter but thankfully I don't need to eat them to appreciate their beauty, :-)

I only know Sirius as the satellite radio thingy in my car, LOL!  Love the picture, but the peppers are too hot for me!

The evolution of science has saved more than one dog life then:-)   We are hot, hot, hot, here in Sacramento.  We have been in a heat wave for several days, and are forecast to continue in the 100s until Thursday.

The little peppers pictured above are delightful looking, Alexandra!  I hope you are having a great weekend!  Stay cool!

I might also add that I did not know that hot foods were eaten in hot weather to promote sweating.  But it makes perfect sense.  I need to chuck the watermelon and salad, and get my body to do what it's supposed to.  I've been getting up at 6:00 am to go swimming, while doing everything in my power to stay cool:-)  My body couldn't sweat if it wanted to. . .I need to fix that:-)

Beautiful photo of the peppers.  They are photogenic, and  tasty in moderation.  It's true when you think about it, hot foods come from hot climates.  Nothing spicy about Scandanavian cuisine for example!  Or at least I don't think so -- there's not exactly a Swedish or Danish restaurant on every corner!

Ooooh La La.  Those look like some Hot Peppers.  I love hot and spicy food.  As the years go by, my stomach doesn't love it quite as much as before, but it is so worth it.  What are a few Tums or Rolaids among friends.

I have purchased these plants in the past...for their decorative quality.  But I can't seem to keep them going through our HOT months.  Anything that survives the summer here is a HARDY plant!  Kathy

Endre,

You are right, we live really close to the beach, so we are not getting heat blasts here.  However, we did take a walk yesterday afternoon, and go back an hour ago from a very long walk (1 and a half hours).

Roy,

We also enjoy yours, and I heed your advice with camera in hand at all times.

Al & Peggy,

Glad you all have cooler in your world...we are supposed to cool off by Tuesday.

Kevin,

I understand, my father also had a high tolerance for spicy foods, and I love them also, but not much hotter.

William,

That is so true, we don't have to eat them to appreciate their beauty...Happy Sunday,

Sharon,

I love how information can be found in Wiki, and some of it is fun to pass along.

Sharon,

I understand, we are all built differently.

Silvia,

Well soon enough, you will be cooling off while everyone else will be freexing. LOL

Myrl,

You are a delight.  When my parents lived in Aden (hot, hot on the Indian Ocean) the locals made a chicken dish that my parents loved because it made sweat pour off of them.  My mom made it many times, but kept it mild for me...too bad I did not learn how to do cook it.

Dianne,

That is true about Scandinavian food.  I have lived in Minnesota, and my parents who loved their food seasoned and hot hated when they were invited for a Scandinavian meal.  My father carried a jar of garlic salt in his jacket pocket and would sprinkle it on his food when no one was looking.  LOL

Larry and Sheila,

You are right and luckily we live close enough to the beach.  We always have cooling ocean breezes.

Toni,

I understand.  We all have different tastes and preferences.

Belinda,

We all change as we all get wiser and better with age, just like fine wine.

Kathy,

Based on a friend's growing experience in Las Vegas, some plants to survive the desert heat need to be shaded.  She had shade cloth on her tomatoes.  Happy Sunday, A
