Social Media Not Working For You? Here’s Why

Last week I sent out a tweet that I was positive would receive a ton of feedback. When I logged into my Twitter account the next day, I was crushed that instead it got nothing. Sound familiar? Whether it’s Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or another social networking platform, you want to see results. And as more time goes by you become increasingly disappointed. But there are so many people who have been successful with social media – you’ve seen it with your own eyes! So how can you be successful with your social media efforts?

As real estate virtual assistants, we hear the ups and downs of social media from numerous real estate experts. Some are stories of success, while others are woes of frustration. Luckily, we cater to both. If you feel like your social media strategy just isn’t making the cut, these three reasons could change your outlook for good.

Unclear Goals: What are your social media goals? Is it to gain more clients? To be known as a community expert? To provide sellers with the best real estate advice? Encourage website traffic? Whatever your goal may be, it is imperative to have a plan on how to get there. If you’re not sure what your goal is, then in all honesty, your efforts are being wasted. You don’t want to shoot and hope you get somewhere near the target. You want to hit it spot on. This will take time. Be patient! And if you’re not sure what you want out of social media, your real estate virtual assistant can give you a few pointers.

Unrealistic Expectations: It’s extremely important to have realistic goals with your social media efforts. As real estate virtual assistants, we have seen a lot of people struggle with this. It’s been a week, why don’t I have more followers? I’ve liked “x” amount of pages, why don’t I have more likes on my page? After three months on Facebook, I still haven’t gotten any leads. These are common concerns, and it’s understandable that you want to see results from your investment in social media. But social media isn’t a magic wand. It’s unlikely to attract a ton of business quickly. Think of social media as a long term business strategy and think beyond the numbers. Aside from attracting fans, you are building brand recognition, exposing your business to more clients, promoting events and eventually making sales.  Don’t give up!

Negligence: One of the most common complaints about social media is that it “takes too much time.” While this is true – it does take time – it shouldn’t be your excuse for not doing your best. When real estate agents notice that their social media efforts are taking time away from their day, they will end up ignoring it or working it into their schedules only when it’s convenient. Well, this doesn’t work. You can’t ignore it because then your online presence is gone completely, and you can’t only do it from time to time because then any momentum you gain is instantly lost. An inconsistent effort means inconsistent results. If you are staying focused on these efforts everyday you will see the return on your time investment and make it a priority!

Social media isn’t always a trip down Easy Street. It takes a lot of time and patience before you will see  the full benefits. Luckily, your real estate virtual assistant does more than just listing marketing. From Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, LinkedIn and more, you can pretty much say we’re experts. Give us a call and we’ll give you some ideas on how we can get the ball rolling with your social media campaign!

Have a peaceful day!

I took part in a webinar today on this very topic .. Twitter, and how to use it to attract business.  I learned so much, although I  have been active on Twitter for quite some time... I have already implemented some of things I learned today!!

Excellent post, Lauren. If it were easy, we'd all have it. Instead, we have to learn the ways that work and then actually find the time to do them.

Gloria, we're glad to hear that you're taking proactive steps to grow your presence on Twitter! It does take patience, strategy and time to develop the web presence that you really want. We also think it was smart to start implementing what you learned immediately! Waiting for the "right time" will pretty much ensure that you never end up using your newfound skills. Now you just have to stick with it! If you ever have any questions, feel free to let us know!

Wayne and Jean, you're absolutely right! If it were easy to obtain a bunch of legitimate, engaged followers then people wouldn't be expressing frustrations about their web presence. It's the people who aren't afraid to try new things, work at and invest in their presence AND take the time to implement their strategy that see the most success with this. :)
