Blog10 Signs Your Blogging Is Working

So you've started blogging and you're not sure it's working?  You're like everyone in the biz and you want it to work YESTERDAY, and frankly even that isn't soon enough!  But unless you hit the blogger's lottery, chances are it's going to take some time to get those consumer calls!  And maybe never for those calls if your topic selection isn't attuned to what the consumer wants.

So how do we know our blogging is working?  Here's 10 things that we've had happen that tell us it's working (in no particular order):

1.  Two listing referrals in the last two months from Active Rain members.
2.  Multiple quotes in the local paper and magazine regarding real estate and school levy influence.  And we've had the RE/MAX blog for the weekly e-newsletter twice.
3.  Small business owners that know us by name when we walk in.
4.  A small business owner that has our post about them captured on the front page of their website and leading readers back to our blog.
5.  Requests for us to blog about events we've covered before, with updates for this year's event.  And yes, we do blog by request!
6.  Calls from people that think WE are the event hosts or business for localism posts.  We make it clear at the end of each post that we're REALTORS(R).
7.  Google likes us.  Finding your posts on page 1 and sometimes even at the top of page 1 organically for key phrases we target?  Pretty sweet!
8.  Emails and calls from potential home buyers and sellers, especially noticeable in response to our niche blogging.  This took time to develop.
9.  Increased traffic on our main site because our blog site links to it.
10. We know more about our communities, neighborhoods, events, etc.  All because we're blogging about them, and to do that, we have to be out and about.  Driving neighborhoods we've never shown a home in.  Attending events we might have otherwise skipped.  And it's a good thing!

So keep on blogging.  The signs that it's working aren't always going to be so obvious as a phone call saying "I've been reading your blog and you're my REALTOR(R)!", but the signs are there.  And if you're NOT getting signs that your blogging is working, it may be time to re-evaluate the What and the How of your blogging.  Might we suggest some Active Rain University review?  Bob will get you on the right path!

Back tomorrow with another post (if not sooner!),

Definitely something to shoot for.  I think many new bloggers just have to be patient and keep blogging - it will come.  :)  Of course writing about quality topics helps and being interesting never hurts either.

Every time I talk with an agent who isn't using Active Rain I urge them to start - and to blog regularly. Few take the advice.

I think the big problem is that people want instant results, and it just doesn't work that way.

It reminds me of a co-worker who once laughed at me for writing prospecting letters, because he tried it and "they don't work." It turned out that he had sent one letter to one prospect...

Andrew, Both of your statements are right on target.  Being patient and providing quality product are crucial.

Marte, We may be in one of the worst businesses for wanting immediate response.  And one letter to one prospect to determine letters don't work??  Wow!

Bob, We continue to learn and hopefully improve.  Many of our initial posts probably don't do much work for us, but more of the recent ones are written with the intent of staying power.

I'm delighted to  be one of those who gave you a recent referral as a result of your AR activities.   I hope you get a quick sale of the Thomas property.    Their parents have a lot of friends in this area and they'll sing my praises for a great referral.

Margaret, And not a bad #11 to have :)  We've been daily participants for two years and just enjoy what we gain from this community.  There's no place else quite like it.

I get calls all the time from people who think I am in charge of different local events.  It may not mean immediate business buy my name and number is out there and that's a good thing.

Liz, We had a call Saturday morning from someone that read our Rubber Duck Regatta post.  He's basically looking to support non-profits and has the means to do so and liked the fact that we were agents promoting the event.  He's looking to engage us to help with his efforts, a win-win in our book.

Liz and Bill,

Those 10 measurements are not the only ones.  For instance, I have found that I have had increased calls on my key consulting practice in areas of leadership and strategic planning.  Please that do not know Active Rain  have said they have googled me and I have come up first in the area.  Thanks, Active Rain.

Grant, Definitely not the only ones, just 10 that came to mind quickly for us.  More often that not, the finder just knows "the Internet" and not that it was an Active Rain blog post.  We'll take it however it comes :)

It sounds like you have to down to a science. Does this mean there are a lot of agents in surrounding areas of OH that are on Active Rain? Is this a normal amount of referral for you or has it increased?

Elisa, It's our first referrals that stuck.  We've had a couple of attempts, but they were outside of our market area.  In one case we helped them find someone in Cincinnati urban area, the other was so far from us that we didn't have a contact.  There are not a lot of active Active Rainers in our immediate area.  You'd think between Cincinnati and Dayton there would be, but not so much.
