Sandy, Halloweens Gone By and Politics

Since we are bracing for Frankenstorm I’ve been busy preparing for the worst, but hoping for the best. Now there’s nothing left to do but to wait for Sandy to hit land. Right now we’ve got rain and wind, but nothing bad……………….yet.

I was thinking about Halloween when I was a kid and how different it is today. We used to make our own customs(nothing elaborate, usually bums) and carry a pillowcase to haul our candy.

I don’t even remember parents taking us trick or treating – we traveled in large groups of friends, even when we were really young. So much has changed as the world has changed.

I find it a little annoying how both candidates, President Obama and Mitt Romney seem more interested in our votes than our safety, asking people to get out and vote early before this disastrous storm hits. Maybe it’s me, but it seems both men are more concerned about campaigning than people’s safety.

The good news is, since we still have power and I have time, I’ll be stopping by blogs, playing in the Rain guilt free!

Lastly, I'll be thinking about all my Active Rain friends on the Eastcoast during this storm and praying everyone stays safe. We're in this together!

Lets shake things up at your home today!

Worry free Halloweens are a thing of the past unfortunately.  We always traveled alone in home made costumes also, and it was fun.  As for being annoyed by President Obama and Mitt Romney consider the source and that should explain it all.  Enjoy playing "in the Rain" literally and figuratively.  Hope you don't lose power.  If you get scared, give Marty a hug and tell him it's from both of us!  ;~)  How is Brian doing?  Is he home?

Kristine - it is sad that that kids today need to be chaparoned to go trick or treating.  When I was around 5 or so, the very thought of being out in the dark was both scary and fun at the same time!!

I, too, hope that the damage from the hurricane is not too severe....

God forbid someone not be able to vote because of a natural disaster.  I'm sure voting is the last thing on anyone's mind being affected by this storm right now.

Kristine - I have great memories of carrying huge pillowcases to gather trick or treat candy.  Of course, in those days, we were given the huge, regular sized chocolate bars...  not these woosy little mini ones they sell today!  Will keep my eye on CNN and see what's up with the storm.  I hope Lucy will be ok with all the storm noise.

My last post was about trick or treating too.  I used to go with my aunts and uncle.  They were a bit older, but still kids (my dad is the oldest in his family and my mom second oldest so I had aunts and uncles who are just a simgin older than me)  and mom didn't go and I got home well after dark already stuffed with candy, cupcakes and apples that no one was afraid to eat.  I find it sad it has to be the way it is today.  And the center for disease control was actually where I choose to "linK" to for the safety tips... also very sad to me.

As for voting, I kind it very important, but just shake my head that the candidates are worried about people voting in the wake of what sounds like one of the worst storms to hit the NE coast of the U.S.

Well Kristine where I am in Woodbridge VA schools were closed today and tomorrow.  We have had rain temperature falling but so far so good. The worst is expected around 12 am. My family is ready in case of power outage.  Hopefully there will be a Halloween...we shall see.

Kristine: When we were kids things did seem much simpler and the only politics we heard was when a couple of grownups were "discussing" things.  I also hope those on the east coast, you included, are safe and sound during this storm.

Hi Kristine, we had snow this morning, but no accumulation like some other nearby towns.  We used pillow cases as well to haul our candy and we always went as a group...my siblings (10) made a big group :)

GF~Thinking of you today with safety and warmth in mind..."hunkering down" was the common phrase all over the news last night. I kept thinking about you and my sister in Cleveland and my other family scattered throughout this area that's so hard hit. I heard the Gov. of NJ admonishing those who wouldn't heed his words to LEAVE and go to safer areas.

I am going to try to call you and see if you have power.

Love you and hope you guys are okay!

Hello Kristine,

I hope you are OK... We got fortunate this year, didn't loose power. But it is devastating to watch news right now... I heart goes to people in NJ and NY.

Kristine, sounds like you did not have the storm they were projecting, and SO GLAD.   Ginny is without power, and trees down everywhere.      It is sad that the campaigning is so tough.    If each of those men spent that much on something worthwhile rather than advertising, it sure would feel better.   So glad we only have one more week to listen to it!

I am grateful that all worked out well for your family Kris. I am also sad for the little trick or treaters who have missed two Halloweens - it's such a big event for kids. You continue to be in my thoughts. xxoo
