How can I save on property taxes in Travis County, Austin, Texas

In Texas we can apply for a Homestead exemption if you own and live in the home on January first of the tax year! If you are closing in 2012 or thinking of closing in 2012 on a home you will be eligible to take advantage of applying for a homestead exemption on January first, 2013!

Considering the low interest rates offered and being able to apply for a savings on your property taxes on the first of 2013 it is a great incentive to make a purchase of a home and close by the end of the 2012.

How do I apply for an exemption?
New exemptions applications require a copy of your vehicle registration receipt. If you do not have one, call 512-854-9473 and a duplicate one can be faxed, emailed or mailed to you free of charge along with an exemption application form.

Where do I file the exemption?
File exemptions at the Travis Central Appraisal District. You can call 512-834-9138 or visit their website http://www.traviscad.org.

Is there a charge to file?
There is no charge to file. Beware of letters from private business offering to file the application for a fee.

How can you confirm your exemption?
Be sure and check your tax bill and that box 6 is checked with the letter “H”. If you are a senior citizen or disabled taxpayer it should include and “S” and “D”.

If you live and own a home in Travis County in Austin Texas make sure you are taking advantage of the Homestead Exemptions which saves you money on your property taxes.

Hi Toni,

People do get confused as to when they need to apply. Once they have applied they don't have to worry about it again!

Good Morning, Dorie. The Homestead Exemption is nice perk for reducing the amount of property taxes that homeowners pay. You have clearly presented how they can apply for it, and where to send their applications.
