In Texas we can apply for a Homestead exemption if you own and live in the home on January first of the tax year! If you are closing in 2012 or thinking of closing in 2012 on a home you will be eligible to take advantage of applying for a homestead exemption on January first, 2013!
Considering the low interest rates offered and being able to apply for a savings on your property taxes on the first of 2013 it is a great incentive to make a purchase of a home and close by the end of the 2012.
How do I apply for an exemption?
New exemptions applications require a copy of your vehicle registration receipt. If you do not have one, call 512-854-9473 and a duplicate one can be faxed, emailed or mailed to you free of charge along with an exemption application form.
Where do I file the exemption?
File exemptions at the Travis Central Appraisal District. You can call 512-834-9138 or visit their website http://www.traviscad.org.
Is there a charge to file?
There is no charge to file. Beware of letters from private business offering to file the application for a fee.
How can you confirm your exemption?
Be sure and check your tax bill and that box 6 is checked with the letter “H”. If you are a senior citizen or disabled taxpayer it should include and “S” and “D”.
If you live and own a home in Travis County in Austin Texas make sure you are taking advantage of the Homestead Exemptions which saves you money on your property taxes.
