When the forty-niners journeyed to the Sierra foothills in search of gold more than 150 years ago, many stopped on the way and decided to stay in Sacramento. The qualities that made Sacramento an attractive seat of commerce back then are still compelling today. Sacramento is home to high tech manufacturers, software developers, biotechnology and medical research laboratories, food processors, medical equipment manufacturers, call centers and distribution facilities.
Old Sacramento, a 28 acres historic waterfront (on the Sacramento River) park with 100 shops, restaurants, and museums can be reached by a pedestrian tunnel from the Downtown Plaza across hwy 5. Old Sac is a national Historic Landmark with wooden sidewalks, horse-drawn carriages, and dozens of restored historic buildings which are forever frozen in the late 19th century. When wandering through Old Sacramento, the Delta King, a historic 5 deck riverboat that once hauled passengers and provisions from Sacramento to San Francisco is now stationary on the River for you to taste a little of the past along with the Delta Queen. The Red Hat Ladies recently took a tour on the Delta Queen and had a wonderful time.
