Oleander, Poisonous Plants

Oleander is a shrub with beautiful and colorful flowers. It is also one of many poisonous plants.  If it is been consumed by children or any pets, it can kill.

The shrub likes full sun and is salt tolerant – being able to grow along the beaches as well as it can stand the polluted air along heavy traffic highways.  You may use cuttings to propagate. It is fast growing. You can prune it into shrub or a small tree.

Oleander has a variety of colors: crimson, light pink, pink, red, white and yellow. It begins blooming in the spring, and continues throughout the summer with clusters of showy flowers.

Problem of Oleander: Oleander caterpillar enjoys eating the leaves of the plant and may strip the plant bare, while building blackish “webby” looking nests under roofs and along walls.  Aphids and scale insects will also nest on the leaves.

 Happy Wednesday!

Kwee, such a beautiful plant and shrub.  I had no idea it could be poisonous!  This is good information for your consumers to know before planting something like this!

Kwee, you like oleanders a lot more than I do.  I guess we all have different tastes.  I have never been a big fan of these bushes.  But you do make them sound lovely.

Here in California, many citizens call Oleanders, "Freeway" plants.  We often find them in the center divide of our highways.  A few years ago, they took them out along a highway stetch in rural San Joaquin county, where there is a lot of livestock.

Hi, Kwee -- we had plenty of Oleander at my first home, in North Phoenix, years ago.  A very prolific grower and many in these parts would use them as natural property borders.  All the best to you and yours -- Eric

My mother always called these "Poison Plants" and taught us as children not to touch them. As an adult, I do not worry about touching them, I just am not going to EAT them. HA! No worries. I know some flowers are edible, but I am going to enjoy them as eye candy, instead of a delicacy. HA!

Kwee,  We have plenty of these in my area too.  Always have to be careful where you walk my dogs.  They are so allergic.

I admire these plants but won't have them in my yard as I like to make compost, or sometimes burn the rubbish.  They are just too dangerous.
