Anemones are a fascinating underwater sea creature, and we find them during low tide attached to the reef by their foot. This creature is related to the coral and jellyfish. Like their cousins they have tentacles which respond to the slightest touch and send a sting into their prey paralyzing them and guiding them into their mouth.
There are over a 1000 species of anemone and they can be found in every color of the rainbow. The one pictured in the first photo is mint green, whereas in this picture, they are irridescent blue and some actually look like fine opals, aquamarines, or saphires.
Carpinteria state beach is the locale of over a mile of tidepools. It is part of the California State Parks system. By state law these creatures are protected. At low tides volunteers are there to inform and answer questions as well as to keep an eye on the visitors. Marine biologists show up to count shells as well as species, which determines the health of our waters.
Many of the visitors return annually to visit the tidepools. Happy Sunday, Cheers!
