Stager- Heed Thine Own Words!

Lest you think that Stagers are perfect and never have any clutter, let me show you just a portion of what I’m dealing with this afternoon.

orchids

This is not to rub it in to my friends to the north, but we in Florida are having a cold front coming in tomorrow night.  My friend, Toni Weidman, over in the Tampa area will get cooler weather than those of us here in Palm Beach County.  I know that she and Craig will probably be doing the same thing I’m doing, if they haven’t already.

Every winter for the 1 or 2 times that I have to go through this, I chide myself for having so many orchids.  Before I moved to Northern Virginia several years ago, I had about 125 orchids.  I have since “downsized” to about 50 (give or take a few) and once again, I’ve vowed not to buy another orchid.  (at least until the next orchid show)

Don’t laugh, we take temperatures in the mid 40’s at night very seriously.   When you have 50+ orchids outside, they can be very high maintenance in cold weather.

Their little roots don’t like to be outdoors in below 50 degree weather for more than a night or two.  Some, like my vandas are particularly sensitive to cold weather.  And those just all happen to be with buds now, so they need to be protected.

If left out, likely they won’t just diebut they will show their unhappiness at being kept out in the cold by refusing to favor us with their beautiful flowers for the next year (or two.)

I am off to haul in some more orchidsand wonder to myself why in the world don’t I edit some of my collection.

Kathy:  You have me chuckling a bit.  My wife's uncle was a physician.  His wife was always telling him "physician, heal thyself" because he had a tendency to work long days and not take care of himself.  I'm getting the same message from your post and title.  We KNOW what we should do, but ...

Great reminder ...

We will be facing the cold here in Nashville tonight, it was in the 50's all day, but the high tomorrow will be 8 degrees. It will only last a few days, but that's colder than it's been for many years here.

Hi Kathy, Beautiful flowers!  I can't imagine downsizing or editing any out - but then again I'm not the one hauling them in and out.  Thank you for sharing one of your passions.

It may be time for me to pick up a couple new orchids. Mine are always inside but no blooms at this time. They are such an interesting flower.

I can't keep an orchid alive.  I've tried twice.  If I try again, I'm calling you for advice.

Kathy, you don't "edit" your collection because it is so beautiful!  I have to figure out what to do with my banana trees, I have Venice bunch that is not quite ready to be VCR and another stalk just started to bloom and setting fruit!

Noah- I feel sorry for our visitors to Delray over the holidays.  While it was warm, it was also overcast and windy.

Karen- and a very happy New Year to you and Arthur!

Gene- I have more to bring inand cannot believe that I am anxiously looking forward to the next orchid show.

Larry- I can't believe it will be that cold in Nashville!

Rebecca- when we lived in Northern VA, it took me 2 hours each week to carry my orchids over to the sink, water and feed them.

Margaret- I can remember my first orchid (I killed it) and now, I love any chance I can get to view them.

Allison- I love finding the unusual species orchids.

Chris Ann- give me a call.  My orchids actually did pretty well when we lived in Northern VA.

Silvia- I'd see what the growers do.  If we don't get a lot of wind that would help.

Because I don't seem to have the delicate hand it takes to nurture orchids, I'm relegated to enjoying the success people like you have with them.  For me, sadly, my "orchids" come from HomeGoods and I can't kill them.  If you ever want to write a primer on orchid growing, I'll be reading.  I can't tell you how many times I've been tempted to try again.

I wonder Kathy what do you consider a cold front.  I'm watching the news as I do every morning while I comment on posts in the Rain.  It's 2 degrees now with a blanket of snow and a high predicted today of 11.  Now that's cold.

Hi Kathy.  People forget that it can be cold in Florida.  Take good care of your flowering friends.

Interesting, Kathy.  Can't you just cover them?  Here, we use old towels and sheets to cover the cold sensitive plants.  I take the old towels and wrap the stems/cover the ground.  Then, I toss one or two old sheets over the top.  On the delicate ones, I use some old boards so they sheets aren't actually dragging the plants down.  Oh, and I water them just before covering.

Other than the babies, I don't keep live things in the house....HaHa.  I'm not very good at keeping them alive!  My mom just told me it was 35 this morning in her Floridian neck of the woods....that's crazy!

Haha! From one warm weather climate to another, I can symapthize. "Cold" is all relative! At least your orchids are lovely, unlike some of our clutter!
