Stolen Renoir to return to the Baltimore Museum of Art

A small Renoir painting that was stolen in Baltimore in 1951 will be returned to the Baltimore Museum of Art. The locally known “Renoir Girl” had claimed that she purchased the painting for $7 at a flea market.

U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema awarded the painting to the Baltimore Museum of Art and the museum plans to exhibit the painting in March.

‘Flea market’ Renoir ordered back to Baltimore Museum of Art by federal judge The Washington Post

This is an interesting story since the museum initially claimed that it had no record of the painting. A reporter for The Washington Post discovered the record of the theft in the museum’s own records.  Dolores and I always enjoy our visits to the Baltimore Museum of Art and will be happy to see this painting when it is exhibited.

When you click on the above link, you wil see a photograph of the Renoir.

Had not heard about this. Think the decision was a correct one. Should go back to the museum.

Roy,

I am happy the painting is being returned. we both like Renoir and his work. The museum back in the day did not want to admit someone stole this painting.

Roy,

So glad to hear that, we have loved Renoir, and when the Jeu de Paumes was around, we would spend long hours there.  I used to love when the French teachers would be lecturing their classes on Impressionism.  It was fun for me to eavesdrop, and then translate for Ron.

Now in the Quai D'Orsay, they seem lost among everything else.  A

I love Renoir and was blessed to see quite a few when I worked for Sotheby's.  Those Great Masters and Impressionist auctions were well attended and incredibly exciting.

Hi Roy.  Strange that the museum initially denied ownership.

Roy, interesting story. It could make for an excellent movie... what happened on the voyage of the Renoir.
