The Arctic Club Seattle

By

The Arctic Club building in Seattle was built in 1916. It's now a Double Tree by Hilton Hotel. I worked on the 2nd floor for Northwestern Title Company from 1984 to 1990 when the building was owned by the City of Seattle.

It's a beautiful old building and I love the Northern Lights Dome Room. This huge room has a leaded-glass domed ceiling complete with Rococo motifs. The light is filtered through the domes colored glass and makes for a wonderful atmosphere. As a hotel, it's was beautifully restored in 2008 with great attention and detail to its original glory.

The Arctic Club was a fraternal organization originally formed in 1908 by those who returned to Seattle after striking it rich in Alaska in the Klondike Gold Rush. Note the terra cotta walrus heads along the third story facade.

I was rummaging through some old books at The Beatty Book Store back in 1986. I absolutely loved this place and really enjoyed talking to the owners, Barbara Beatty McGovern and her husband Tom. One day I totally scored and came upon this... The Arctic Club 50th Anniversary, published in 1958.

This hardbound book with a golden cover is full of wonderful old photos of club events back in the day. It includes a list of patrons, past club officers, and a personal shout out to Sophie Tucker who loved the club and was ordained the official 'Sweetheart of the Arctic Club'. It also has a complete 1958 membership roster and I recognize many of the old Seattle names.

Hi Rene,

Great hotel chain as I have stayed at other Doubletree Hiltons. I love the history of this building and the carved walruses too.

Rene,

I love those types of room with a dome that have been restored.  San Francisco's Sheraton Palace has a beautiful room called the Garden Room, it has a beautiful glass domed atrium from the olden days.  In Paris, the Intercontinental Hotel around the Madeleine has a similar room, and one of our favorite restaurants in Paris has a lovingly restored Art Nouveau Orangerie that had been hidden behind walls for years.

It sure brings back the golden age of building and architecture geared to please.  I am looking forward to seeing this, next time we are in Seattle. A

Hi Kristin... Love those walruses too!

Alexandra... It's worth it just to pop into the lobby and take a look around! I've walked by the Sheraton Palace in SF... but seeing the photos on the web, I definitely need to see this place in person!

I so appreciate the ties between Seattle and Alaska. I remember going back home for the summer, after college, each year via the ferry. Seattle was always the first welcome before 'home.'

( I'd love to see the sun streaming through that leaded dome window)

Roy... Thanks! I love that old building, it's a Seattle gem!

Debb... There are so many ties between Seattle and Alaska. I love that too! I really enjoyed seeing the ties to Seattle when I was up in Alaska last year. It really gave me a perspective I never had before then.

Rene, Awesome post. Love Seattle's history. I have walked past that building many times and not thought much about it other that it was a beautiful building.

Joe... Thanks. I love downtown too! There's so much to see!

Lou... It is a cool building with a very interesting history. Thanks!

Donald... Thanks and me too. What I'm amazed at is the early cast of characters and their Alaska connection. To think how much work it was to travel and they were everywhere doing stuff.
