Don't Forget to Check for Ticks After Those Fall Walks

Remember the Ticks are Still Active, Don't Forget to Check for Ticks After Those Fall Walks.

I took a break to go look at a woods today with one of my Foresters and came back with nearly a dozen tiny little Deer Ticks.

Whether you are hunting, hiking or just looking at rural properties, it is good to remember that these fellows are still active and looking for victims.

Deer Ticks are tiny and hard to see but they are the dangerous ones, so it pays to do a tick check, get your clothes in the washer, and jump in the shower soon after getting home.

This may also be a good time to review this post from earlier this year and follow the advice.

Tick Checking, an Important Job that can be Fun

Though ticks are around throughout the year, we are now in the hieght of Tick Season in this part of the country.

You don’t have to go anywhere near the woods to be found by a wood tick or a deer tick.  We find most of them are lurking in the grass between the road and the woods and sometimes even in our lawn.

When I was a kid we did not get too excited about ticks, they were just a part of summer.  Lyme disease was not something that we had heard of yet but we still did a daily tick check just because we did not want one of these frisky little blood suckers ballooning up on some hidden part of our body.

When I was in college during the early 80’s Lyme disease became a serious and somewhat mysterious issue with ticks, worse yet it was in the wood tick’s tiny cousin the Deer Tick.

Now tick checks became a neccessity, and a check for the deer ticks is not an easy check since these fellows are TINY.

Though the disease can be serious, I still don’t get too concerned about these little fellows.  Most of the time they reveal themselves by bumping into hairs as they travel up your body and can be picked off and disposed of.

Also most of them will be washed off if you take a shower within a few hours of picking up a tick.

And for those ticks who get by this step, it can be fun to have a friend (generally your spouse) do a check either in the shower or afterwards.

But if all of this fails and you do get one of these fellows embedded on your body, especially if it shows the telltale bullseye type target around the tick or if you are feeling like you have the flu in the summer, go see a doctor where they will start you on an antibiotic treatment.

Thanks to Margaret Rome for the song suggestion, though I may know a lot about Ticks, I don't know much about country music so I had not heard of this song until now.

Good morning Bob. So very true, your post should be read by everyone on AR. It doesn't hurt to check yourself, but it could truly cause you issues for years if you don't.

Hi Bob, it's very important to check for ticks, I know someone that got Rocky Mountain spotted fever from a tick.  That was in 1970, don't know if it is still a disease that people get from tick bites.

Lyme disease is rare in California, but hiking as much as I do makes me aware. Especially on fall and winter hike, I love lying down at lunchtime, hat over my eyes, enjoying the gentle warmth of the sun--I always think about ticks, though!

This is very good information. I was going to re-blog this post but the option is missing.

My younger brother's health declined after contracting Lyme disease. He died last year.

This is important information Bob Crane, I have never seen an illustration regarding their feeding cycle. We have deer and ticks in VA and I had three bites last year. One got infected and I was on antibiotics for a while. I'm sorry about the loss of your brother Roy Kelley, tick bites are not something to be taken lightly.

Thanks for stopping by friends, so sorry to hear of all the people who have been infected by these little critters, keep passing on the warnings and hopefully less will be infected in the future.

Bob, growing up with these little monsters I've had my share of tick checks. I like the cycle of life of a tick you explained. Lime disease is a scary topic.
