Coffee House Poetry ~4th grade poets~at Canyon Creek Elementary in NW Austin
I’ve been serving on the Canyon Creek Elementary Site Based Advisory Board as a business partner for 17 years since the school opened. As a former teacher I’m interested to keep up with how our community school serves our students.
I was so interested in the annual Fourth grade enrichment activity I asked to see the decorated room where the “Coffee House Poetry” took place.
The walls in the room were draped in black sheets and there was a small platform with a podium and a microphone. There was white tulle draped to form a center stage framing gold letters “Coffee House Poetry.” There were tables draped in black and I had to blink my eyes because I was certain I stumbled into a coffee house and not a classroom!
Students memorized a mentor poem, like Sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare, as well as recited two of their very own original poems! The fun part is they invited their families and served them coffee, hot cocoa and muffins while they presented their performances! A student was chosen as an MC and introduced each student. The 4th grade was a buzz in excitement over their performance last week!
I’m impressed with the creativity of this event and exposing students to shed their inhibitions and be comfortable in front of an audience. These are skills learned in conjunction with the objective of writing and composing their own work.
It’s not a wonder the Canyon Creek Elementary is held in such regard and always leads the scoreboard on the highest rankings in the RRISD. The staff cares about nurturing these students to become well rounded leaders of tomorrow!
