Speechless Sunday - Winter in ND

By

Missouri River Bridge Bismarck ND

This is an old Ektachrome slide that I recently had digitized. It's a picture of the old steel span bridge over the Missouri River in Bismarck, ND that I took back in February 1971. I was only able to get this one shot before my camera stopped working - I found out the reason when I got back to my hotel: it was -46° outside.

Here's another one taken during that endless winter.

North Dakota Windmill

I haven't complained about the cold since that year of living in North Dakota.

-46 degrees.  I can't even imagine it!  I think the coldest I've experienced in my life was 8 degrees ABOVE zero!

Those digitized Ektachrome pictures are pretty darn good. I like the bridge, but love the lower one of the frozen North Dakota landscape.

Yikes! -46 degrees?!? Who knew a camera wouldn't work below a certain temperature? Surely not I, as I would never venture outside to attempt to photograph if it were that cold!

Dick I am surprised that at -46 degrees your fingers were able to push the button on the camera to take the picture :)

Oooohh ... yes, that is cold.  A kind of cold I am happy to say I've never experienced and would not want to.

Dick- it's hard typing with gloves on but I had to grab a pair after looking at your photos.  I have never in my life been in "-" anything degree weather.

What a tremendous looking sky, such deep colors that are on display.  The winter looks to be way too cold for me and I know that I have never even been in weather that cold.

For me as an Oklahoman I will appreciate your great photos. In my opinion, anything under 80 is winter.

Thanks for sharing those.  I imagine winters in North Dakota are much, much more severe than what I experience too.  A little perspective is always nice.

I drove through N. D. this past week and it didn't look like winter, but the temps were not far off.

Hi, Dick...nice shots. I love both of them. The last one really does look cold and bleak. I have experienced the midwest winters. They can be brutal.

Brrrr. That looks so cold and I am glad I wasn't there. I get cold at 50 degrees with a wind.

I've lived in some pretty cold places growing up Dick Greenberg but I don't remember -46 degrees. After living in Phoenix for the past 30+ years, like Debbie Reynolds, I think it's cold when it drops below 50.

Minus 46? Sounds like Fairbanks, Alaska. Can't believe you were out there taking photos.  It's a great shot though. :)

And I thought Chicago got cold. I don't think I could live in temps like that.
