let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...

I'm seeing posts on Facebook that show snowfalls on the east coast of 28", 32", 40" and more.

And of course it makes one think about how much snow was the most snow you ever had?

This photo is a Chicago Tribune photo of Lake Shore Drive in 1967... the 67 Blizzard that's still spoken about in hushed tones in the Chicagoland area.

Over a five hour period on a Thursday morning that included rush hour, we have a snowfall of 23 inches.  The snow caught hundreds, if not thousands of cars on the city highways, and the city became paralyzed.

We kids loved it, our parents... not so much.

In 2011 we had another big snow... only 21 inches fell overnight this time... but it was a particularly snowy year and the 21 inches fell on top of an already 12-15 inches in place from prior snows... so the we were covered.  Parking anywhere in the city was almost impossible, and cars were buried, only to be found in the Spring.

We were fortunate... yesterday's snowstorm by-passed Chicago... this time.

So... what was YOUR biggest snowfall??

I had an inch in Central Texas 4 years ago. Not impressed are you? Well there is a reason I put up with 105 degrees in the summer. Hope you dig out okay.

My husband's family is from Chicago and one January (can't remember when maybe '93 or '94??) no snow falling yet - the dump trucks were on one of the expressways one on each lane side by side dropping salt on the road and one of the cousins said "Ah Oh!". We are in for a big one!  Sure enough the next day O'Hare was actually closed down and we had to stay an extra day.  I hadn't seen that much snow in my entire life!! Where I live now, the most snow we have had in 24 hours is around 8-9 inches.  I love the snow but our snow melts fast!

I don't remember a big storm in early 90's... although we had a 21 inch plus, in 1999.

Hi Alan May - That 67 Blizzard was something else. The most I've ever seen was when I lived in NYC. I believe it was the 93 nor'easter. For a boy from the desert, that was quite a shock. I think I went out and bought proper winter attire after that!

That 67 blizzard made its way across the northeast... dropped a huge amount of snow...

I remember a blizzard in 1978 that shut down our state for 3 days.  It was horrible, and I had plenty of ice cubes, but the liquid to coat them with ran out.

ooh... shut in by snow, and out of bourbon??  Talk about an emergency!?  I might have to break into the Chardonnay?

This was a few years ago about Christmas time. David and I had gone to dinner in the town just next door and the hail turned to snow. Our house (4 miles away got nothing). I can understand the concept of snow.

I don't remember the exact amount Alan May but I remember in 69 (Fargo ND) we had a blizzard that stuck us in the house due to a snowdrift completely covering our split level home.

we actually sledded off our own roof... down the drift... (mom and dad were none too happy).

We had a Christmas Eve snowfall in Houston about 10 years ago.  It was a nice touch to the season and we built a snowman about 6 inches in height.  I'm not a cold weather person.  The temperature needs to be higher than my age!

If the temperature has to be higher than my age... it's going to start getting awfully warm round here.

I think back to when I was a child......maybe it wasn't as big as I remember, as I was a lot shorter then!  Keep warm!

as a kid, I used to measure snowfall by whether or not school was closed.  It takes a lot of snow, in Chicagoland, to shut down the schools.

Good morning, Alan May I remember the blizzard of '78 in Franklin MA.... the streets were being plowed with front end loaders and backhoes and dump trucks to cart the snow away.....there was no place to put the snow.... the mound were higher than they should have been for safety reasons....

We pile up our snow in parking lots across the country... sometimes the piles are so deep and so high... that there are still remants in April and May.

OK, time to stop blogging and go out to meet my snow shovel.  I'm too embarrassed to call the Senior Citizen Hot Line and have the mayor send over a volunteer to do it for me.  Maybe this isn't the time to be vain!

Alan- I heard that there snow flurries in northern Florida today.  I think they melted before any snowball could be made.

The mmost snow was a few years ago we had 27 inches but we didn't have much wind.  Some storms we have had less snow but because of the wind it was worse.

the wind always intensifies a snowstorm.

I would have to say inches at best. I recall once when I was a child that it snowed in San Jose. Today, I can look up at Mt. Hamilton and I might see some snow.

I've only seen snow 3 times - it's a rare occurence in South Alabama, but in the 1970's, maybe 73, there was enough on the ground to make a snowman.  I don't know how y'all make it up there in weather like this.

We recorded 450 inches of snow for the winter of 2013/2014, but I don't think the biggest storm dumped more than about 20 inches. It just never stopped...

True! We had another foot of cowboy powder over the weekend. My 5 year old showed me around the terrain park, but I was too scared to go over the jumps. Then again, she's a Wyoming native, whereas I'm from Texas...

I grew up in Alaska and we'd lose count of the inches, that's how much snow we'd get. :) I just remember waking up and knowing it had snowed over night because it was so quiet. It's sure pretty, but tough to get around in for the most part.

I guess, when you live in Alaska, it's one of those things you expect.

I remember a snow of about 4 or 6 inches in the San Francisco Bay Area back in the early 60s.  That brought everything to a screeching halt, no make that a sliding halt, and created a big mess.  I like rain for a reason, you do not have to shovel it.  Thanks for the blog.

in a city with those hills... 1/4" inch of snow will slow things down to a crawl.
