Getting the Job Done Isn't Always Enough...

Getting the Job Done Isn’t Always Enough.

Do you have a checklist you follow in your work? I’d imagine that agents have a lengthy checklist...contracts signed, inspection ordered, Open House scheduled, etc.  And by following your checklist, you make a checklistsure that you get the job done.

All businesses, large or small, have procedures they follow.  It may be as simple as making sure that the door is unlocked and all signs are on by a certain time to making sure that all steps are taken when entering a home on the MLS.

Today I was in a place of business to make a purchase. The owner got the job done...she took my credit card, placed my items in a bag, handed me my receipt and never once did she say diddly squat to me.

During the course of my entire visit in her shop, she never asked if I needed any help or even bothered to greet me.

She did, however, manage to carry on a conversation with her associate about how slow business was because of the summer.

So, yes, this business owner did get the job done...I spent money in her shop.

But this is a case of not being enough.

In her mind, I’m sure she felt she did. She made money.

But there was a step she left out, and that was remembering that getting the job done  is more than a business transaction.

There’s a person behind that dollar bill or credit card.

So, just a reminder when you’re making your checklist for getting the job done, don’t forget to add in a step for acknowledging your client as well as their needs.

I don't always have a checklist, but find them very handy.  When something is really important, I always jot down some notes though.  How is your BARFF doing?  Is he still your BARFF, even though he is no longer part of the Rain?

As much as I prefer not being asked if I need help and having a clerk follow me around the store....I agree with you.

Being personable and friendly is a crucial part of business!

Hi Kathy ---   When I'm in a store -- I want to be able to quickly find what I want in pleasant enough surroundings, be able to have questions answered promptly and correctly before getting out of there in as seemless a manner as possible. Oh, yes and to be thanked for shopping there.

That was my goal when I was in retail and that is my goal in real estate.

Totally agree Gabe Sanders I know one place I won't be going anymore.

It should be on everyone's checklist. James Dray

Hi Kathy - That's a foolish step to miss in any business, but it's especially deadly in real estate - clients remember.

Dorie Dillard I have a feeling they mainly have tourists for customers and aren't concerned about repeat business.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE you would have thought that she'd have learned that by now.

Exactly Beth Atalay We have a friend who has a retail business.  Her husband is strictly behind the scenes and that's what everyone prefers.

Brian England BARFF is always that regardless of where he is.  I keep up with him on FB.

Sharon Tara exactly.  I don't want to be followed and hovered over but I do like it if they say "hello."

Bill Roberts as soon as NEVER!!!  I have a few places I've chosen to boycott. It doesn't have an impact on their bottom line but it sure makes me feel good.

Actually I think it will have an impact. I'll bet you aren't the only one that got that treatment.

That's exactly as it should be Michael Jacobs It is a huge pet peeve of mine when retailers are like this, to me or to anyone.

Dick Greenberg you have no idea.  There's an agent who did not get our business because they called our home and instead of saying "hello" to me, asked to speak to Larry.

Good afternoon Kathy. I used to know someone like this. I think she was afraid of people but whatever, there is more to a job than the tasks. When you interact you can guarantee a return visit.

Well that's not smart business!  I ran into one like that the other day. He was more interested in talking with his associate about a date than acknowledging the customers. I was pretty sure the boss would have been very unhappy with the employees.

Anna Banana Kruchten That is a pet peeve of mine when I go into a retail store.

Good Morning Kathy -  I can think of one or two store like that is our town.  People come there because they forgot something but they don't seek them out. These owners in your example don't get why business is so slow.  They are the reason.

There's a lot of room for improvement in every business. I remember a time when a sales clerk knew my name or a least acknowledge that I was my mother's daughter. Plus, my mother trusted me to go the store and get what she needed. Those days are gone! But we can change that, can't we!

Well said Kathy Streib and so many agents just skate by with service and sometimes the clients /homeowner didn't know they could have gotten so much more.
