It’s December and time to reflect: What is the difference between a Winner & a Loser?

It’s December and time to reflect: What is the difference between a Winner & a Loser?

It is December and the Holidays are upon us, it is time to reflect. It is not a time to stress, it is a time to take responsibility.

What is the difference between a Winner & a Loser? This question is constantly on the mind of anyone who is in competition, whether it is Sports, Politics or Real Estate. In our society there is virtually no recognition for “second place”.

In Real Estate, I have never heard of anyone bragging that they came in second place out of five people who competed for the listing. In our society if you are not a winner than you are loser.

People who are in sales understand this concept very clearly. Ironically, I find that it is very little that separates a winner from a loser. Just look at a baseball player, one more hit, one more run and one more save can make the difference of being a hall of famer or just another player. It is about attitude, determination and dedication.

How does one achieve a winning attitude? I attribute it to being self-motivated and having a drive to wanting to achieve success. On Active Rain it could be the drive to get to the next milestone: more points, more featured articles, more followers the list goes on and on.

In Real Estate one can achieve winning by not taking “no for an answer, i.e.:  being the final no”, by making one more call, by sending out one more email. The list is long but you get the idea.

In other words simply  said, it could be going the extra mile. This is what I call going the extra mile: in real estate I find that it might be something as minute as responding to a potential client’s question faster and with more knowledge than the other agent. If you are the listing agent sending out one more Flyer, sending out one more marketing piece that could be the difference of the property being in Escrow or having an Expired Listing.

Determination is having a strong will power. When there are setbacks, hardships, winners have the discipline to control their mind and stay the course i.e.: Perseverance to succeed is in their DNA. No need for motivation gurus to call them in the morning and have accountability calls in the evening. Winners know how to succeed because they are their own harshest critics.

Dedication, when it would be easier to go to sleep early, instead of staying up late, when it would be more fun to read a new book, when it would be easier to go out and have a nice dinner, instead of blogging for your business, instead of making that one more follow up email, by making that one more marketing piece to be in the mail and the list goes on and on. That is what Dedication is all about.

So now you know what the difference is between a WINNER and a LOSER, my question to you is WHAT are you? A Winner or a Loser?

Thank you for a thoughtful post abuot winning and losing. There are important lessons to be learned from either situation, even though winning, in most cases, mighr be more desirable. And having been able to compete, even if you don't win, can be an invaluable experience.

Endre Barath, Jr. - excellent analogy and you're absolutely right!  I have a team of agents, all of whom serve in a different capacity and what is funny is the way that news is received by each of them, is so different!

I believe winners have a very different perspective on life - they are BOUND to succeed regardless of the obstacles or the failures that they face!

Just like most billionaires, they've lost in business many times over but, if you fail to learn from your failures, you'll never succeed.

Desare Kohn-Laski Skye Louis Realty  I used to run Track & Cross Country in High School and did not always come in 1st place but more times yes than 2nd place.... so I get it. My team mate had more talent and  I had to work harder because of it...Endre

I think what made you a winner at that time was coming to the realization that you have to work harder. An old adage which I frequently hear from many sports people is quite fitting, "It's not about winning or losing a game, it's about how you played the game."

Hi Endre Barath, Jr. - Winners are never satisfied.  I have a saying.... I am constructively critical of everything I do.  This is a blog that is not only timely but gets people thinking of what they need to do. It is perfect for moving into 2017.

Endre, getting back with someone right away always seems to surprise them in this business! I do that regularly and answer questions immediately and do call backs ASAP, too. It makes people feel important and what an easy "hook" to get them to become clients as a result. Glad to have seen this in Kathy's weekly!

Dick Greenberg  indeed it is not always a Zero Sum situation,  in my examples of the other day Army Navy football game, there was clearly a winner and a loser, yes critics of this concept would say they played a great game and they came in second...well ... not really, Endre
