Are Real Estate Lawn Signs A Waste of Time...?? Carlisle, PA.

A for sale sign has not outlived its purpose. Buyers still drive around looking for houses, neighbors still look out their windows to see that their neighbor is selling and they watch for the sold sign to go up. It drive business.

When searching for a restaurant to dine in or a new car to purchase - where do you begin?
Most people would opt to open their laptop and do a quick search.  Even more people will simply forego walking over to the laptop and will simply pick up their smart phone and the needful information is at their fingertips.
Would you simply hop in the car and drive around looking for a restaurant that catches your eye or would you stop by car dealerships to walk around to view vehicles up close?
In an age of quick access information, is it inconceivable that some prefer to still drive around to see what catches their eye?

This brings me to my question: Are Real Estate Lawn Signs A Waste of Time?

Most Realtors continue to go through the effort of erecting a For Sale sign in a front yard.
What are your thoughts?  Is this simply a repeat of what has been done in the past?  Has anyone ever questioned its effectiveness?

According to the 2015 National Association of Realtors Home Buyer and Seller Generational Trends Report, 51% of all buyers still drive around and look for yard signs in their desired neighborhoods.

The research further breaks it down to share:
Of the 51% of buyers that search homes via yard signs

49%  are first time home buyers

51% are repeat buyers

44% are new homes

51% previously owned homes

So, don't be so quick to think a yard sign isn't that important.

Hi Debbie - I think Maria Sapio makes a good point.  A lawn sign will bring in many people driving by.

I've actually never thought the yard sign was going the way of the dinosaurs. We still get tons of sign calls and contact info from text riders, so it is clear that even if a buyer searched online first they still get out and drive around.  Sometimes another property brings them to the neighborhood but they find another home because of the yard sign.  Her stats are interesting though, I wouldn't have thought they were that high for driving around.  -Kasey
