A mountain oasis full of natural beauty. At Heaps Peak Arboretum you will be awe struck by the exquisite botanical gardens full of diversity. There is nothing like escaping into nature along the Sequoia Trail at the Arboretum. The trail boasts of tree's like the Arizona Cypress, Sugar Pines, Black Oaks, White Fir, Dogwoods and so many more. Wildflowers create a picturesque view while foot bridges extend over seasonal creeks and horseshoe springs. With plenty of benches along the trail, you can sit, relax and observe the wildlife, especially the birds.
Demonstration Gardens at Heaps Peak Arboretum is an amazing place to learn about plants and what plants grow the best in the San Bernardino Mountains. Containing over 30 species of flora and naturally occurring wildflowers, you can also find native perennials and introduced native plants throughout the botanical garden.
This is a great adventure and learning experience for the entire family. With many Kiosks strategically placed throughout the Arboretum, you will find important information about Heaps Peak and the entire San Bernardino Mountain area. With flowering plant illustrations, photography and even information on the infamous western pine beetle that caused the pine tree die - off in the mountains of Southern California. Full of rich history you will be amazed, educated and taken all the way back to what the site looked like when it was still just a vision !
Heaps Peak Arboretum is located in Lake Arrowhead, California.
From Highland Highway 330, come up the mountain and turn west onto Highway 18 in Running Springs for 4.5 miles and the Arboretum will be on the right side of the highway.
From San Bernardino Highway 18, come up the mountain and continue past the Lake Arrowhead turnoff (Highway 173) and Skyforest. Stay on Highway 18 for approximately 2 more miles and it will be on the left side of the highway.
Look for the small Forest Service signs when driving from either direction on Highway 18 that indicate a "hiking opportunity 1/4 mile ahead" This will be your warning to reduce speed and get ready to make your turn.
