The Goals Challenge and my One Thing for 2018

Goals, Goals Goals, I am a nut about setting these things and generally drag my family in for a three day goal setting retreat between Christmas and New Years.

But this year was a bit different, I got sick, so sick that I was knocked out for an entire month, work suffered, my volunteer missions suffered, and my goal setting/finalization was postponed.

It was nice to get back to work this past week, and the homeless people were delighted when I finally showed up at the homeless shelter this past Saturday.

And this week I have been working hard to finish up my goals for 2018.

My wife pointed out to me that I have been doing this so long that I probably could get by without going through the process, but I still thought that it was important to do some review, adjustment, and polishing.

Debbie asked for my top three goals so I will try to isolate the top 3.

Rather than sharing the actual goals, it may be better to share the three areas that should be focused on.

  1.        My Health, Building a Healthy Bob in 2018 is a key area, as my coach and my doctor pointed out, “being dead is bad for business”
This first mind map is a snapshot of the outline detailing all of the things involved in creating and maintaining a healthy Bob.
Things like exercise, budgeting my sugars, drinking plenty of water, and trying to figure out how to get some sleep with my busy schedule.
Many have pointed out to me that the likely cause of my month long illness was the fact that I thought that I could just ignore sleep as I tried to maintain four businesses and several ministries.
This year I will be working on getting more sleep.
  2.        My Franciscan ministries including my work as the local minister and the regional vice minister as well as working at Franciscans Downtown and the local Warming Shelter for the homeless.
All of these are vital missions so they will continue to get my full attention, fortunately we have been working hard at finding more volunteers so we may get by with less of my personal time, I hope.
  3.        My Businesses, several of these run fine without my getting in the way of my quality team of professionals so I have been able to dedicate much of my time to building up the newest business, Woodland Real Estate.
This last year was a building and learning year filled with intense immersion in the KW systems and bringing this knowledge and the systems back to my other businesses.
In 2018 we will continue this with more of an emphasis on Team Building.

A few weeks ago a friend asked “What is your One Thing for 2018?”.

It did not take me long to write up what my one thing was.

As Gary Keller always repeats in his mantra, “what is the One Thing that if done consistently will make everything else easier or unnecessary?”

I knew what this was right away largely because my coach has been pointing this out for months.  Leverage!!!

I need to focus on building and growing my team, my teams in all of my businesses.

Leverage is a word that Coach Michelle uses with me often, as she pushes me into the activities and training that it takes to build a great team using the great systems in the MREA model.

She knows as I do that with a great team I can spend less time focusing on the small things in my businesses and more of my energy focusing on the big picture items that I do best.

So this year I am focusing on my one thing, Building and Leading a Mega Team for all of my businesses and my missions.

By doing this, One Thing, everything else will be “easier or unnecessary” for me to spend my energy on.

Bob, I was going to make a joke about you and I competing to be dead last at turning in our entries for this contest, as I noticed you posted a few minutes before midnight, but then I read your article about being sick for an entire month! YES, you absolutely must delegate and leverage and get help with your passions and businesses so you can take care of your most important asset, your health! Best of luck. I'm glad you are feeling better, and much success making 2018 your best year yet!

I have been watching you over the years and noticed the incredible amount of business, family time and church work you do. I could see the candle burning at both ends and knew you were giving your all but taking away from your personal maintenance and rest. I am glad to see your refocus and how you plan to stay healthy, grow a business and manage that growth. Wishing you a highly successful and fulfilling 2018, Bob.

Thank you very much for sharing some of your goals for the year. I agree that personal health needs to be a priority. I was sick during the holidays and Dolores was sick for most of January.

I think focus on health is such an important goal to strive for, Bob.  Without it, everything else is a moot point!
