Security: How good is your security system? Do you have your home...

Security: how good is your security system? Do you have your home well protected? What do you do or what should you do when you are planning to go away for a few days?

There are various definitions of “Security” and what they stand for. I have noticed, that sometimes people refer to “systems” whose purpose is to provide security for their homes. Some people have security cameras to protect their homes. Others choose to have alarm systems installed and then there are others, who have the alarm system connected to a Security Company. They in turn can send out a patrol to respond, just in case an alarm is tripped off.

I have also read many articles about fake signs placed in the front yard as having a security system is not a real deterrent.

I have also read articles about people placing stickers in their windows and on their front doors that they are members of the National Rifle Association. According to police statistics, they are generally just an invitation for potential burglars who are looking to pick up an easy way, weapons of various types such as pistols, rifles. Now if you asked me this is a scary message.

I have known people who put a large food bowl by their front door, the purpose is to imply that they have a large dog inside the house. I do not find that as a deterrent either. Let’s be real burglars are smart, they check out a home in advance, they do a reconnaissance. They observe what the routines are of the home owners as far as comings and goings, they do not just arbitrarily target a home on a spur of the moment basis. Now if you happen to come out with a large dog to walk him/her then maybe, but if they see a cute little fluff ball then not so much.

So, what can you do to protect yourself? Outside of never leaving your house and parking your car in the driveway, what are your real options?

  1.        If you trust and like your neighbors let them know when you are gone and for how long.
  2.        Have some one pick up your mail daily.
  3.        Have someone stay over aka house sitter while you are gone.
  4.        Have a pet sitter either stay over or come over three times or at the minimum twice a day.
  5.        Set your lights on at intermittent times when it gets dark.
  6.        Have motion sensor lights outside your homes perimeter.
  7.        Keep your shrubs short and away from your home’s perimeter.

These are generally simple and practical deterrents. In all fairness the less routines are being observed daily, the safer your home will be from burglars. I am lucky being a Realtor working out from my home I am hard to predict when I come and go.

By the way, the above points are not all inclusive and if you have other ideas please share here as well. Now with that said, please look at this picture and you can see, we are clearly well protected from any burglar considering entering our home.

Great tips Endre.  Common sense often is the best security, though I've found that common sense is not all that common.

Endre lots of great ideas to consider for folks that haven't thought about their 'security system' yet. Years ago I had my own 'security system' when I was single living in a townhome - a pair of big man cowboy boots outside the door. It worked just fine then. But honestly we've had several systems over the years and upgrade them as necessary. And we also have a house/pet sitter when we're gone and all the neighbors know as well.

Michael Jacobs  it is sad that we even have to focus on this subject. I used to go to a school where the motto was: Duty, Honor & Country and we did not have locks Con our doors and just about every one kept the Honor Code and seldom did anything grow feet, Endre

I don't know what we'd do for security if we ever left the house for more than a few hours at a time. As it is, our coming and going is irregular and it's not often that both of us are gone at the same time.

When we're home, we have a canine security system. I'm not sure Katie would actually eat an intruder, but she's big enough to do it, and her voice sounds like she's the most vicious dog alive. Then the other two back her up.

I just wish Kate would quit sounding false alarms when she's laying near my desk and I'm working. A bird flies by the window, a deer runs across the meadow, she hears a vehicle drive past, and her roar raises me clear off my chair.

Love the "watch cats" Endre!

We usuall have a house sitter when we are gone, a car in the drive, and lights on at various times. And we let the neighbors know, too! You've shared some great tips!
