Security: how good is your security system? Do you have your home well protected? What do you do or what should you do when you are planning to go away for a few days?
There are various definitions of “Security” and what they stand for. I have noticed, that sometimes people refer to “systems” whose purpose is to provide security for their homes. Some people have security cameras to protect their homes. Others choose to have alarm systems installed and then there are others, who have the alarm system connected to a Security Company. They in turn can send out a patrol to respond, just in case an alarm is tripped off.
I have also read many articles about fake signs placed in the front yard as having a security system is not a real deterrent.
I have also read articles about people placing stickers in their windows and on their front doors that they are members of the National Rifle Association. According to police statistics, they are generally just an invitation for potential burglars who are looking to pick up an easy way, weapons of various types such as pistols, rifles. Now if you asked me this is a scary message.
I have known people who put a large food bowl by their front door, the purpose is to imply that they have a large dog inside the house. I do not find that as a deterrent either. Let’s be real burglars are smart, they check out a home in advance, they do a reconnaissance. They observe what the routines are of the home owners as far as comings and goings, they do not just arbitrarily target a home on a spur of the moment basis. Now if you happen to come out with a large dog to walk him/her then maybe, but if they see a cute little fluff ball then not so much.
So, what can you do to protect yourself? Outside of never leaving your house and parking your car in the driveway, what are your real options?
- If you trust and like your neighbors let them know when you are gone and for how long.
- Have some one pick up your mail daily.
- Have someone stay over aka house sitter while you are gone.
- Have a pet sitter either stay over or come over three times or at the minimum twice a day.
- Set your lights on at intermittent times when it gets dark.
- Have motion sensor lights outside your homes perimeter.
- Keep your shrubs short and away from your home’s perimeter.
These are generally simple and practical deterrents. In all fairness the less routines are being observed daily, the safer your home will be from burglars. I am lucky being a Realtor working out from my home I am hard to predict when I come and go.
