An Adrenaline Rush | The Thrill Of The Kill Competing To List Property

I can remember when I was actively listing property, and how much fun I had securing listings.  It was a different time and marketing was done offline and with open house events to network for more business. Networking was as significant marketing method, along with direct mail marketing.

Competition was always a factor, and I loved it. There were times when I wanted a listing just because I knew I was in competition with others, and I loved the thrill of “the kill.”  Yes, “the kill” is the adrenaline rush that I experienced when I closed that seller or builder.  It’s the feeling one gets when the game is over, and one has given it his/her best and won!!

The problem with winning a prize I didn’t want was that I now needed to make sure it sold. It was a situation that happened on occasion.  I usually did like what was in my inventory, but there were properties that were not my favorite.

It could have been an ugly home with no curb appeal; a piece of land that had many issues; or a subdivision of homes in a tough location.  I’ve had them all and marketed each one to completion.

Was it worth the effort?  It always required more effort to accomplish something I did’t like as opposed to something about which I was passionate.  Once I won “the kill” of the close, I was committed, like it or not.  Remembering the thrill of “the kill” is what gave me the strength to finish the task.  Unless one follows through and sells the product, one didn’t win anything!!!

I often miss that fun. Mentoring is as much fun as I get now. The attitude of “the kill” somehow sneaks into the conversation. No one seems to like that phrase!!   It still gives me a rush to just think about competing with other listing agents!!"

I used to work with a guy that referred to it as slaying a lion and he would get pepped up each time he said it.

"The problem with winning a prize I didn’t want was that I now needed to make sure it sold."

I love that line, Barbara.  I can fully relate.  More than once when I would procure a less than desirable listing, I'd wonder what the Hell, I had just gotten myself into.  Oddly enough, those listings often sold easier than those in better condition, better location, or some other more desirable marketability.

Myrl Jeffcoat if we're going to be in the game full force, we need to accomplish the ultimate goal of selling the product....

James Dray without the fierce competition, it would not have been fun....

Good morning Barbara.  I used to feel the same way a few years back.  I am now in a position that I am just going to take what I want to take and not try for everything out there.

Gabe Sanders it's not that I wanted the listing.... I wanted "the kill"..... that's what kept me going and created that adrenaline rush.... it was how many I could close.....

Winning a listing is a major rush.  And carrying that enthusiasm to our marketing is not always easy.
