Motivational Monday...Stop “Communicating!”

When this texting thing appeared in my world many years ago it was hard to get used to. My friend, whom I was used to having nice conversations with textingover the phone, suddenly was texting short messages.

She explained that it was easier for her to text while she was sitting at the soccer field or in the gym rather than to try to have a phone conversation.  I get it! And texting grew on me.

~ It’s ideal when you simply need an answer to a question or to confirm an appointment.

~Texting also gives you a digital trail which could come in handy.

~Texting lets you send information quickly such as addresses and phone numbers.

~Texting is a wonderful way to send a quick “Hello” to someone.

But…

~Have you ever had multiple text conversations going and sent the message to the wrong person?

~Why is it that when you have a text stream going and ask a question, you get everything back but the answer?

~ And finally, that darn auto-correct!!! I can’t tell you how many times I might have been thrown in jail because of what my text was auto-corrected to.

One day my friend and I had been texting when both of us decided to just pick up the phone and have a real conversation. It felt great!

Texting has its place but sometimes you need to stop communicating and start conversing.

Let us make a special effort to stop communicating with each other, so we can have some conversation. Mark Twain

As you know I am not a fan of texting. I do it when necessary but I like phone or in person.

Hi Kathy,
You are right, of course.  However, I have talked on the phone so much in my careers that I honestly preer to avoid them... except when YOU call, of course.  LOL

I agree. Texting has its place but it can actually get in the way of having real conversations. Just watch a family at dinner in a restaurant!

I feel fortunate that there is no cell phone service where I live and work. I'd like it because I could drop satellite internet and go to Verizon, but aside from that, it's a blessing.

I have had a client or two who was cross because the texted me and I didn't reply...

Sorry. I asked you to call or email.

My real worry is that kids are growing up texting - and not learning how to spell or form complete sentences.

I haven't ever misfired a text to an unintended person.  However, I once misfired an email that I wanted to reach through the internet and strangle myself with.  When I was first licensed in 1981, there was no internet, emails or text messages.  As convenient as it is, I sometimes miss those days.

I am funny,  I still like to hear a person voice and texting sometimes changes the words and I did not want to say something.

Kathy I still hate to text.  If the answer is going to be more than a couple of sentence, it is pick up the phone and call for me.

Hi Brenda Mayette I love texting for what it can do and yet I feel like we're losing the art of conversation.

Michael Jacobs oh that darn autocorrect. I wish I'd done a screenshot of a text that was almost sent once. It would have been so embarrassing.

Sally K. & David L. Hanson Miss Giphy!

Nina Hollander you're right. It has its place but not a good way to have a conversation.

Wayne Martin thank goodness he had a pen and paper.

Donald Urschalitz I could not agree more. I wonder if younger people know how to speak in sentences anymore.

Barbara Todaro I like that texting creates a digital way to save information.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty this is so true. This is why Larry and I love having lunch or dinner with close friends because it's a time to catch up.

Beth Atalay I agree. Texting makes you think you're staying in touch but you're not as committed as you would be in a conversation.

Sharon Tara our family is using it as well...great way to share special moments.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® my friends will usually text "can you talk" and then we pick up the phone.

Brian England I'm a bit like that. I used to be on the phone almost all day for my job so consequently I would avoid the phone after work. In person conversations work better for me.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel I agree, and besides, my fingers get tired of texting!!!!

Sharon Lee I'm in your camp although texting does have its place.

Carol Williams LOL we both must have talked a lot on the phone in our previous careers. Larry finds it hard to believe but there are times when I don't feel like talking. (rare, though)

Kat Palmiotti don't get me started!!!

Marte Cliff oh yes...that one is sad. How will they do in business if they can't write a report or letter?

Myrl Jeffcoat When I started working in the placement business, there were no cell phones or email either. I'm not even sure they had faxes then.

Will Hamm you're right about that...you can't tell the tone of a message...which is probably how smiley faces were invented.

George Souto I'm with you. A few words...ok. But more than that, pick up the phone.

Morning Kathy.

I have an agent who wants to text all the time, that takes up so much time BTW that I don't have.  When she starts I just call her, the issue is resolved in a matter of moments instead of 20-30 minutes.

Kathy, I like texting for short messages. But, gosh, when I get those long text that make you have to scroll a few time, I just say, "I'll call you". Put it in an email people!

It's amazing what a real treat it is to hear someone on the phone.  Almost an honor that you were called!  This wacky digital world has messed with our minds long enough!!
