Charlotte Animal Shelter Is Over-Capacity And Urgently Asking For Help

Charlotte-Mecklenburg's Animal Care And Control Shelter At Over-Capacity. Please Help By Adopting A Shelter Pet

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Division's (CMPD) Animal Care and Control shelter is at over-capacity and in desperate need of more space in their kennels. The  CMPD's Animal Control and Care Division is asking Charlotte residents to come in to the shelter and provide a fur-ever home to one of the shelter's "residents."

The need is so great, CMPD put out a press briefing earlier this week asking for Charlotte residents to help with pet adoption to relieve the over-crowding conditions in the shelter.

If you've been thinking about adopting a pet, please consider going over to the CMPD Animal Care and Control Shelter for a "no oblibation meet & greet." Adoption fees have been waived for now, but there is a small license fee in Mecklenburg County to own a pet. But you can also "shop" for your new fur-ever friend on-line: DOGS, CATS, OTHER. If you're planning to adopt a dog, please bring a collar and leash; for adoption of a cat, please bring a carrier.

The CMPD Animal Care and Control Shelter is located at 8315 Byrum Drive in Charlotte. The shelter is open Mondays through Fridays from 11:00 am till 7:00 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 am till 5:00 pm. The Shelter's phone number is: 704-336-7600.

Save A Life By Adopting A Shelter Pet

It's estimated that 3.4 million cats and 3.9 million dogs enter shelters each year. Did you know that 1.5 million animals — some 860,000 cats and about 670,000 dogs — are euthanized each year due to overcrowding in shelters? Please help stop this senseless killing and adopt a shelter pet from the CMPD Animal Care and Control Shelter, which is in dire need of more space.

Grant Schneider hi Grant... the Charlotte Humane Society has its pet of the week on our local Spectrum news channel. Otherwise everyne depends on some social media. This CMPD shelter has an adoption event on Saturdays most mornings at the SouthPark Mall. But these homeless dogs and cats just keep coming and coming and coming. I really have no words for this epidemic.

Michael Jacobs ya think, Michael? The shelter had a very successful Saturday during the Clear the Shelters event... 73 animals were adopted, which is 3 times their average daily adoption rate. By Sunday, the shelter was filling up again and by Tuesday CMPD was having a public news briefing begging people to come and adopt. Just breaks my heart. You go to their website for adoptable dogs... and there's 10 pages and I'm not sure that all the dogs are event listed there; some 6 pages of cats on the cat site. This shelter does an amazing job of caring for the animals in their keep, but obviously there are physical limits.

We seem to receive rescue dogs from all over the United States. In fact we just received over 50 dogs from South Carolina. I hope they receive the help they need Nina Hollander

Nina- every morning I read my local NextDoor app and there are always missing dogs or cats or strays that have wandered into someone's yard. It is alarming to see the number of pets that need help. I wish more pet owners would step up and take responsibility for their pets.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 hi Sheila and Larry... we also had a very successful Clear the Shelters Day in Charlotte last Saturday. The Charlotte CMPD shelter had over 70 dogs adopted... by Sunday they were filling up again and by Monday hitting capacity. It's really an epidemic.

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... I see those notices on NextDoor with frightening regularity myself. I also feed two stray cats on my porch every morning and evening. No clue who they belong to but they've been coming to me for years.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS hi Paul... I'm gobsmacked hearing that SC has to "export" their rescue dogs. The need is so great despite the many shelters we have all over the region.

We are starting to see that more and more.  We have been doing clear the shelter events here and that seems to help.

Good morning, Nina Hollander pet owners need to get their pets fixed.... that's sinful to get a pet and then bring it to a shelter or worse....

Barbara Todaro you're preaching to the choir here, Barbara. And there's no excuse not to get one's pets fixed... we have all sorts of low and no cost options in the region. At least when they adopt out these cats and dogs these days, they are both fixed and micro-chipped.

I am sure there are plenty of kids in the Charlotte area that could provide a lot of love, so hopefully, their parents will allow them to adopt one or two!

Brian England hi Brian... as many adoptions that take place every day throughout all our region's shelters, it never seems to be enough. For every pet adopted, at least one new one arrives at the shelters.

Hi Nina Hollander

I hate to see this overcrowding.  I hope that people see your blog and realize they need a forever fur baby and adopt.  I like that they come "all done"!  This is definitely an incentive for adoption.

Nina Hollander - I am seeing these campaigns all over my area and other areas as well. When it comes to pets, responsible people can find the best dogs and cats at shelters where there is love to be given. People need to get there quickly because the sands of time for those beautiful animals is fleeting.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP hi Patricia... it just boggles my mind that as quickly as these shelters empty out, they fill up again. The need is so great and I'd them all those fur-babies home with me if I could.
