What do you think of Do It Yourself Electric installation?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Godzyk Real Estate Services NH License 033394

I got a new bank owned listing full of DIY improvements. Lacking electrical service, they came up with a great way to add add outlets. They snaked wires through a hole once meant to let the warm air form a basement wood stove up to the 1st floor. They then lay-ed the wires across the floor into the room that needed multiple outlets.

For those saying "what about the trip hazard?" DO do not worry, they found an old throw rug to cover them. Now, you must be asking if this DIY job actually worked? YES, the power was on and these lines were "hot."

IN SUMMARY you never know what you will find in a bank owned home. For me, i was happy to get a new listing during these trying times. While home owners are hunkering down, the banks have some vacant listings they are looking to unload.

IN THE END the asset manager was happy I got there within an hour. Completed all my tasks, got pictures, estimates and put a value on the home.

THE BOTTOM LINE is to know how important it is that every Buyer or Seller should not just choose any agent, choose the BEST agent for the job. Having an agent that works for you is a must. Support your local businesses.

My philosophy is simple, provide more personal and professional service to guide my clients through each step of the buying or selling process. All Agents are not created equal and every buyer or seller should take the time to hire the BEST not just the biggest. Those that hire me, find a dedication like no other.

Good morning, Scott... I'm not enthused about DIY projects for electricity, plumbing, etc. There are just some things that need a professional.

Hello Scott - there is a reason that "do-it-yourself" is a term that is not met with much confidence at times --- stories about DIY electrical work is but one of them

Scott Godzyk - I say emphatically - No! No! No! Working with electricity is not for amateurs. I think many people learned how to get their strings of Christmas lights running with patience and time. However, when it comes to safety, leave the electrical jobs to the Master Electrician. Why do I say that?

I have lived through a several fires, including an electrical fire to my home. Having to be displaced, losing lives, the cost of what it costs you after insurance claims are paid, the trauma of the aftermath are not worth it. My experiences with house fires and also being in a hotel fire was the hardest most unimaginable experiences of my life.  I wouldn't wish on anyone.

No way, electrical is a safety issue. NEVER do any DIY job around the house that has the potential to become a safety hazard. Ask for permits for any and all remodels or modifications.

I've never been one to employ handymen and certainly no a DIY person....I want a licensed professional in the trades and permits pulled and signed off....I have no problem paying taxes on improvements.... it's better than a fire.

Hi Scott- even Larry who is very handy around the home, knows when to call in the professionals!!!!  Electricity is not something you want to leave to your Uncle Bob (unless he is a licensed electrician.)

Looks like a nightmare, Scott.  I was once a bride to an electrician.  He is the father of most of my children.  I know how to do the simpler tasks like changing out light switches, etc.  However, once the wall plate is removed, I usually start shaking in fear.  I have a healthy respect for electricity.  Fortunately, my ex-husband lives within 500 feet of me.  I can usually phone him, remind him that I did not ask for alimony or child support, and he usually comes over and performs anything electrical that I require!

I was wondering what photo would greet us with that title. Could have been worse, but congratulations on the new listing, sure you already have some potential buyers lined up.

In my expert opinion (?), I think this looks like a hand full of code violations...
