Happy 4th of July - Happy Birthday America!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Marte Cliff Copywriting

Today, as every day, I give thanks for living in America – the country that President Trump last night called “The most magnificent country in the history of the world.”

I’m thankful to our Founding Fathers (and the women who supported them). I’m also thankful to all the brave men and women who have fought to preserve the Independence they won – and to the families and behind the scenes workers who have supported them.

When I was growing up here, the City always had fireworks on the 4th of July. I had a friend who lived on the hill above the river and we would sit on her front porch to watch the show. Then somewhere along the way they were forgotten. That bothered me.

After I opened my own real estate agency, I joined the Chamber of Commerce and began pushing to bring the fireworks back. Finally they agreed – they gave me the go ahead to put on a show on the 4th of July.

We brought back the firaeworks...

It wasn’t easy, but thanks to a bit of luck and some young women who were good at talking firworkspeople into donating to the cause, we did it. I wrote articles for the local newspaper and the ladies went door to door. The very first donation was from a business man who sent a check for $10 and a note telling me we'd "never make it."

At the time I wondered why no other Chamber members pitched in to help. They told me later that it “wasn’t their project.”

That first year I was so worried. What if no one showed up?

Just as it was getting dark enough to start the show, I went out to the parking lot to get something from the car. On my way back the first shot burst into the air, and a little boy (about 7 or 8 years old) who was also walking back, stopped, threw his fist into the air and shouted: “Happy Birthday America!”

When I think of him and how he made me feel, I still get teary.

That little boy is grown now, perhaps with little boys of his own. I hope he and they are still shouting “Happy Birthday America!”

When the show was over and the lights came on, I was astounded to see the number of people in the park. I was even more astounded when I looked at the bridge, the big parking lot at the sawmill, and the road on the other side of the river. Car lights were coming on everywhere. In addition, there were boats on the river, starting up to head home.

They showed up, and they still show up. While I only led the charge for 5 or 6 years, others have taken my place. I’m glad to say that Priest River will carry on with a fireworks display tonight.

To those who hate our country and are rioting, destroying, and tearing down – I say: We’re not perfect, but we’re trying, and we’re still the best country in the world. So please move. Go find a country you like.

There are plenty of people in America who would agree with you, Marte Cliff. The best of them are standing on the shoulders of our founding fathers and trying the make our wonderful country even better.

Marte Cliff - your beautiful story sounds like a script and/or movie for the Hallmark Channel. I really enjoyed it. You painted a beautiful picture for me here in the dark, all by myself.

Thanks Barbara Todaro We need to focus on what's good about this country - and about our Founding Fathers. I was glad the President gave us some history on those Mount Rushmore men. It's easy to forget what they accomplished.

What an incredible backdrop of Mt Rushmore for that 4th of July celebration. It is an incredible sculpture.

Hi Marte,
Kudos to you for bringing fireworks celebration back to your community. Everyone loves a good fireworks display... except the dogs.  In spite of the parks being closed at 6pm last night, our city had a fireworks display that could be seen all over the valley.

God Bless America and may he have mercy on us during these troubling times.

Carol Williams You're right - the dogs don't like it much at all. I'm glad your city had a big display that all could enjoy.

I intended to go to town, but then a neighbor called to say another neighbor was doing it up big, so I went to his house instead. We had people on both sides putting on displays - and I only had drive a mile to get home.

Hi Marte Cliff - One point you made about people telling you it wasn't their project.  I would say now freedom and the preservation of our way of life is all of our project and we need to stand up now for sake of the younger generation and generations to come.

Jul 05, 2020 06:45 AM
Marte Cliff

Grant Schneider There were (and probably still are) people in Chamber who only support their own ideas. The cliques - it's a bit like overgrown high school.

Meanwhile - I agree with you. Preservation of our freedom and way of life should be everyone's project.

Marte,

Firewords (although illegal unless run by a company approved by the city) were going off.  I am glad somebody make the effort to have that happen in your neck of the woods, and I agree that our country is magnificent to say the least!  A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel I'm glad too - and I'm glad that this has been a wet year, so fireworks going off over a meadow were not a fire danger. The other neighbor shot his over the lake- even better.

Against city ordinance, fireworks were launched all over our neighborhood. A outspoken woman was telling people to stop.  I heard young adults were shouting f-words back at her.  Others called the law enforcement, they said we know.  Anyhow there is a 2400 ac fire across the valley from last night. All in all 133 new fires broke out all from the fireworks.  There we go again.

This AM all electric power was interrupted I went out picked up all the fireworks skeletons. Launch pads, cleaned a wide area. We almost had a fire.

Instead of flocking to community park for the state's largest fire works display each year as normal, it was fireworks. But launched from the highest location in town so everyone could witness them from their Maine homes. Or easily viewed a short walk to a clearing where few people grouped but were socially distanced. Backyard 4th of July's with chairs 6 feet or more apart and camp fires for group therapy and reflection. It was strange though not to be working so hard on local community 4th of July local events.

But remembering past ones was comforting and planning our new and improved ones with COVID19 just makes it a creative challenge. Small town Mainers love a challenge. Used to them in rural areas with lots of weather and economic ups and downs. Thank you out in your own private Idaho Marte Cliff !

I hope you had a pleasant 4th of July, Marte.  My 4th was rather quiet, other than the sound of illegal fireworks.  Most of our local events and firework displays were cancelled due to coronavirus.

Hi Marte Cliff

1 person with an idea and drive will attract others. I share your sense of injustice emanating from the violent rioters, looters, mob. We are not perfect and never will be but over time we recognize our shortcomings and attempt to rectify them.
