When You Know The People You Visit

A blog post submitted by Margaret Rome today brought back a memory of a most unusual character that I had the good fortune to know.  He has long since gone on to his rewards and his way of looking at life was not one of 'If only' but 'So what'.

He and his wife would love to sit in their living room at night and appreciate the flickering of the fire.  They would not always have the right fuel for the fire so occasionally the newspaper would get tossed in.

As would be expected since the chimney maintenance was often ignored, the build up of debris and creosote would get a flicker of flame and start to burn resulting in the fire department being called.

As it was close to the house, they were always there promptly.

Also, as they were there too often, they knew their way to the fireplace and after getting to know the elderly couple so well, were polite enough to remove their boots at the door.

After putting out the fire and cleaning out the mess, they would also admonish the elderly couple for not getting the chimney cleaned.  My friend, however, would point out to them that that was what they just did.

Not the case in real life, however.  A chimney needs to be maintained often and there should be no mixing of fuel exhaust in the same chimney. That means no tapping into the furnace flue with an auxiliarly fuel burner such as a wood or pellet stove.

And as is the law in so  many states especially here in Connecticut, a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector needs to be provided for the safety of all within the house.

Hello Ed - timely and proper maintenance is part of owning property.  It's not something that prompts "oohs" and "aahs" as other parts of a home but they are quite important.

Hi Ed... majority of homes here are now have gas fireplaces with no chimneys. But the older homes which still have chimneys I've found are terribly neglected. For some reason homeowners don't put that on their annual maintenance list.

Nina Hollander   I see some homes with a ductless gas fireplace and cannot understand how people would think of putting on in the house.

Ed, I miss the "feel and smell" of a real fireplace.   We see mostly gas fireplaces, which are nice, but still not the same.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel   A. So few do the maintenance they should especially on a fireplace.

Joan Cox   I don't miss the work associated with a wood fireplace

Hi Ed Silva, chimney maintenance can not be ignored. Not that we really need them in FL but some homes do have fireplaces, mostly gas.

George Souto   I know and the water all over the house as well.  This particular person was so well known and they had been there so often that the firemen had the courtesy to remove their boots.

Beth Atalay   I converted to gas just for the ease of lighting a fire and no messy cleanup

Hi Ed- that's scary!  I can remember our first real fireplace and having a chimney cleaner come out. I felt relieved to know that it had been cleaned.

Their reaction to the fire department coming out is interesting.  I sure would be wanting to be more proactive after something like that.

Kathy Streib   I once looked at a fireplace as getting heat 3 times;  First time cutting the wood, second time splitting the wood and third time in the fireplace.

Brian England   They were so old that the firemen didn't want to give them additional work

Dear Ed,

Completely crazy & dangerous! They could have burned down their house, which probably cost a lot more than some properly seasoned firewood and a regular chimney cleaning.
