we all know that May means Memorial Day but I had no idea that May is also Military Appreciation Month. If you know someone in the military, or who has served, then please take the time to thank them. And, thank you, Endre Barath, Jr.
Hard to believe today is May 1st! Did you know it is also Military Appreciation Month?
Congress in 1999 designated the month of May as Military Appreciation Month. Customarily Presidents since than have been issuing an annual Proclamation reminding Americans to celebrate this month. Have them be patriotic and pay tribute those who served in the military.
Even though the entire month is designated to honor past, present military member and their families. There are a few specific military holidays during the month. Loyalty Day which has been celebrated since 1958 on May 1st.
Military Spouse Appreciation Day was started on May 7th, 1984 on the Friday before Mother’s Day and of course Mother’s Day is always the second Sunday in May, celebrated since 1914. Then there is VE Day celebrated since May 8th, 1945.
Armed Forces Day which is always the third Saturday in May happens to fall this year on May 15th, I am sure my mother would have appreciated this since May 15th was her birthday. In case you are wondering Armed Forces Day has been celebrated since 1947.
Let’s not forget Memorial Day which is the last Monday in May and it has been celebrated since the Civil War has ended.
Now with that said if you know anyone who has served or is serving in the US Armed Forces, or if you know a family member or a relative who is a relation to someone who has Served, or Serves in the Military do something nice for them. Even if all you do is say “Hey I appreciate what you did or do” or a shout out!
Have 31 days in May so make it happen! I challenge you to spread the word.
