Motivational Monday...Never Stop

Any day that I learn something new is already a good day for me. There are so many reasons for that not the least of which is that I truly love learning about something I didn’t know.

What’s in our head is as important to exercise as the rest of our bodies. As they say...Use it or lose it

My neighbor, who is our age, has some cognitive issues.  Not bad though and he works hard at working his brain cells. He is not afraid to try something new.

This weekend he asked for help digitizing a few photos so he could send them to a friend. We spent a few hours, while I showed him what to do. He took notes, then practiced on several photos to make sure he knew what to do.

There weren’t that many photos so I offered to digitize them for him but it was important for him to learn to do this himself.

I admire that!  It would have been easy for him to ask his granddaughter to digitize them the next time he saw her.

By contrast, I have several friends my age who have no interest in a smartphone or even getting on a computer. Of course, it’s their choice.

It is important that we never stop learning...even if it’s a new word a day, or how to fix something...or learning how to prepare a new recipe.  If you enjoy card games on your device and already know how to play Solitaire...then try Freecell!

Not all cognitive decline can be prevented. We are all aware of that. However, just as there are diseases and illnesses that we aren’t able to prevent, we never give up trying.

So as we begin this week, as we begin each day...keep yourself open to learning something new.

Kathy,

Both of us are always learning, every day, several times a day. I love this quote, Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever. Mahatma Gandhi

It is important for seniors to regularly exercise their brains.  Learning new things is a good way to do that!

Hello Kathy,  Of course Ben Frankling was so right in his quote.  I can relate to that all the time.

Hi Kathy,
You're speaking to the choir (not that I can sing) on this subject.  Always trying to learn new things or become better at something.

Kathy learning new things seem to be more challenging as I mature further in life.  But learning new things keeps my mind going, and life interesting.

Tickling the brain is so very important to keep it functioning optimally. Reading every day helps, puzzles and learning new skills as well! Thank you for a wonderful post Kathy Streib and for helping a neighbor.

Nina Hollander, Broker I'm retired from my business but not from life. The reason I continue to blog is to keep my dendrites fired up.

Wayne Martin We've been walking every morning for 15 years and I think it's one of the things that keeps us going.

Grant Schneider so am I!  When I was younger, I wanted a real, working Dick Tracy watch. I had to wait for it, but thanks to Apple, I have one.

Bill Salvatore - YVP Blog it only took a few hours and he's such a good guy.

Jeffrey Richman I've always felt that way. When I meet people who have no desire to learn , even something simple, I have to worry about them.

Brian England I think that there's a lot out there to learn but some people aren't that open for it.

Kat Palmiotti and it can be as simple as learning a new recipe.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel my friend's mother is 102 and is still very active and a voracious reader. And, she never stops learning something.

Myrl Jeffcoat it really is important. And it's important to exercise different parts of your brain.

Will Hamm it's like cooking. If you involve your student/child, they will learn a lot better. Just handing them a recipe or having them watch you isn't as good as letting them cook with you.

Carol Williams retired from work doesn't mean retired from life or learning.

George Souto  I started doing jigsaw puzzles years ago to help exercise a different area of my brain.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS same here. If you show me how, then I need to immediately try it myself.

I love that you took the time to teach your friend, Kathy - and I love that he actually wants to do it himself. I believe in the Benjamin Franklin quote and know that in retirement, I plan to continue to utilize that theory!

Like you, I have friends that are far more stimulated in retirement than when they were working! They worked for decades, doing the same thing and it became 'old hat' so, now, in retirement, they are finding even more challenges than when they worked. I love that and plan to follow their lead when I do eventually retire!

Morning Kathy.

Exactly why I visit AR each and every day.  Rarely is there a day that I don't learn something.

Staying engaged is a very good thing.  Social engagement, real time, is super important.  Have learned that while dealing with my mom's dementia.

That said, in general, the more I learn and the more I'm engaged, the better I feel.  Taking on a project of making a staging table this week.  We'll see how it turns out.
