Friday Fun…And Then There Were None
As luck would have it, while we were on our morning walk and chatting with friends, the bluebird chicks in our last bird “nursery” began to fledge. (You can read more here.)
We had an idea that this might be the day because 4 bluebirds began to dive-bomb Larry when he was checking out the dewberry patch near the nest box.
I have to hand it to the parents because it’s not easy keeping an eye on the new fledglings. Some will fly almost immediately…still kind of wobbly and others need a little encouragement.
The chicks fledged from this box earlier this week. It has been cleaned, sanitized, and replaced.
Mama and papa and chicks from previous broods assist to ensure that nearby predators are kept at bay. The chicks are guided to nearby trees for better protection and where their parents can watch and feed them.
Mom and dad are looking in the grass for recent fledglings.
We are once again “empty nesters”
