How Often Do You Check the Charges on your Credit Card?

By

Last month I made my final plans for my Summer Vacation, which meant the hotel reservations for the trip.    In order to get the BEST price for some of the hotels, it required payment in advance and non-refundable.   UGH.   Sure hope nothing happens before August!

Not all hotels required this payment in advance, but about 5 hotels did.    Yesterday I was looking to see how much was on my bill for the last billing cycle.   Lo and behold the Hilton in Casper billed me again that day!     I called the hotel, and the person who would look at these charges had just gone to the bank, but she would return my call when she returned.    She called and said, it was supposed to be marked at advance payment, and someone hit the button wrong.   We laughed, and I said, that hotel room would be pretty expensive if they were going to charge me each and every month until vacation time!   The charge was reversed.

I know when I ask for a receipt, sometimes they roll their eyes, but you would be surprised at how many bogus charges I see on my credit cards!!

Good morning as well Joan Cox - Being vigilant regarding our bank accounts is now more important than ever before. Your posting is an excellent reminder. Also I too always asks for receipts and still get the occasional eye roll.

Leanne Smith it is sad we are where we are today, but we have to be so aware of what is happening with our credit.

How true and one of the ways to keep our finances as secure as possible is to never bank online. I was told this over 10 years ago by an FBI fraud and cyber crime expert.

I had not heard that, but do pay bills online.

Hello Joan - "gone to the bank" is hopefully not a euphemism.   Being, staying and keeping aware is important.

Good morning Joan,

In our world you do have to be vigilant..everything has moved to on-line and less personal contact thus there are unintended consequences that arise.

We must be so careful with our credit cards. This kind of thing happens quite often. We work hard for our money...keep an eye on it!

I check my invoice every month.  I have found few inadvertent charges like you had, but I have found many fraudulent charges, sometimes for thousands of dollars.  I have no idea how they get my information.  Luckily, the card companies have taken all of those charges off my account, but it sure is a pain to get a new card each time.

I am glad they fixed your mistake so quickly and that there was humor involved in getting it corrected.

Ray Henson last year the week before I left on vacation, my CC company called and someone was charging all over the world.   That was sure a pain, as couldn't use my personal credit card on vacation.

Hi Joan,

Speaking of vacation, I can remember two different trips to Maui where my credit card info was stolen.  Lots of hoops to go through to get it cleaned up.  So every other day, I check all my statements.  When you are on vacation, these thieves realize you are probably not checking your credit statements.  They prey on tourists.

We went to Molokai and had to rent a used car to see the island.  They wanted the driver's SS# before renting.  We didn't think anything of it.  This was decades ago.  But they had every piece of info they needed other than your bank account.  YIKES!

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® it just seems the scammers need our credit/money more than we do, and sad they can put such a damper on a vacation by stealing our credit.  So sorry to hear you had this issue.
