Are YOU Losing MONEY Because You Don't Know Your JOB? Feng Shui in Long Island.

By
Home Stager with Feng Shui Manhattan Long Island #888

As a full time Feng Shui Consultant who is all over New York City and Long Island, a homeowner and part time helper to my mom, I lead a busy life.  With the move I am making, it has become even busier. Not yet being able to refinish the basement (which has been going on for a year but NOT a sign of any water leaks) I decided to put the money (originally slated for a brand new car) into the upstairs of my home-the part I actually spend 90% of my time in.

After my misadventures last year of calling everyone individually (roofer, gutter person, someone to grade the land, engineer) I thought I could save a great deal of time calling a contractor for the upstairs.  Here's something I didn't think of:  I have to date called five--not ONE of them knew what I was talking about in paints or carpets-or anything else used in my home when I'm mention low to no VOC's).  "You go find what you want and we'll add it into the price."  Ok, I thought, I can do that.....

I could have, I believe, if the paint stores knew what I was talking about.....they didn't.  I went to large home improvement stores to smaller, "helpful" stores and no one knew what I was speaking of.  I used different terminology--low toxins, the green movement, materials and glues that don't outgass or have low to no odor.  I figured I had spent enough time and decided to call in just a painting contractor---have to start somewhere.  I found ONE in the many calls I made (which leaves me with only one estimate).

For the last three days I have been "carpet hunting."  I went to a large, well known carpet store close to home and was almost pushed out the door....not that the salesmen were busy; in fact, they were sitting there doing nothing.  When I asked for what I was looking for I was told that "every carpet in the store was now made to meet environmental standards."  I already knew this, however I also knew that much of it depends on the material itself, the glue and adhesives that make it more "green friendly."  I was told to go home, look it up and return-where I'm sure they then would have been happy to take a commission and install what I'd chosenDid they really think I would return?

I called carpet stores...and called.  And finally found one who said of course he knew what I was speaking of....and went in today to find a wonderful salesperson who spent his time, showed me a variety of "green" carpets and helped me choose from them.  They will be sending larger sized samples to me home and will then send an installer.  He's not only got a new client but MANY referrals!

Carpet---Feng Shui Long Island & New York City

I have to wonder with new hotels (see some of Mitchell Halls wonderful New York City  posts), restaurants and many other buildings who are going for LEED Certification, when we now have ECO brokers to help us find a friendly environment, where is the knowledge these people should have in their fields of expertise?  I wouldn't go back to them because of both their lack of help AND lack of knowledge but why are they so resistant to continue to learn their own field.  And what has become of customer service?

They are losing business because they don't know their own jobs...To this day I am still learning Feng Shui-going back to the older methods as well as some of the "newer" thoughts on it.  It's my WORK, it's what I do and I want my clients to have the BEST of knowledge and information.  Long Island, from a New York Feng Shui consultant's point of view, it's really time to learn about Environmentally Products!

You're so right Carole! I'm glad you found carpet you are comfortable with. I know with my 'situation' ... my kitchen is finally getting fixed on Mon-Wed.

Carole, I'm shocked (maybe I am naive) that people in the carpet business don't know ALL kinds of carpet. Maybe they view what you are looking for as too niche or not mainstream. I bet you were shocked too. I hate it when carpet goes in and it outgases for awhile with some funky chemical smell in it.

Carole: I do a lot of interior design work as well as home staging. It is sometimes difficult to find suppliers, especially for some of the newer technology or products. I am fortunate here in Los Angeles that there are so many clients demanding "green" products, that many suppliers have already gone down that road and at least understand what we are looking for.

By the way, both Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore Paints have full low or no VOC paint lines.

Good luck with your remodel. Its very difficult when you are in the middle of it, but so worth it when you are done.

All I can say is:  I hope, when all those people went home for the day, they got on their computers and Goggled "VOC" so they'd at least have some idea what it meant if another customer asked about it.

I can hope.

You've just described a "niche" that these business owners are missing the boat on.  Perhaps one of them will find and read this and a lightbulb will go off in their heads.  Think of the marketing they could do to promote their business as knowledgeable in this area!

Carole,

I'm always amazed at how 'un-helpful' so many salespeople are in large home building supply stores...they seem to know so little and have so little interest in helping customers out. I believe this is management's fault. They aren't training their employees properly and in the end the entire business suffers.

I'm glad to hear things are progressing in the right direction for you now and you were able to find someone who was knowledgeable in this area AND helpful.

Carole ~ It sounds like these were lazy salespeople.  I talk about the low VOC paints on consultations all the time now, especially for families with children.  They appreciate hearing about it, even if they weren't aware it was out there.  This makes them more knowledgeable if they do decide to paint and have their own paint contractor come in.

Hi Carole ... It's amazing how you read so much new or reintroduced products, only to go the stores and find that they are clueless.  I had the same experience, a number of year ago, with linoleum.  Anyway, one thing that I now do is to find a brand that is exactly what I want.  Asking for the brand simplifies it ... stores only need to know that they carry it.  It has saved me time.

Carole:  Your persistance should pay off very well for you.  I wonder if some of these people don't know their product because they won't be there that long anyway so why care would seem to be the attitude.  Of course, if that's their attitude, then they are sure not to be there very long.  Some people feel it doesn't matter to lose a customer because there will be others.  They better count their blessings because the competition could be eating their lunch. The other thought that strikes me is they obviously have no passion for what they do.  Passion makes all the difference.

Carole--If they treat you that badly when you walk into the place for advice, can you imagine the service (or lack of) you would get when they came to do the installation? If someone wants to stay in business through the tough times, they need to educated themselves and provide a service...Or else the potential customer will go elsewhere!

Carole - Some people are in their comfort zone and is afraid to venture out until it becomes absolutely necessary.  We are living in a world that is rapidly changing in all sense, so to survive we will need to continually hone our skills.

Sally, It should not be so difficult to find people who are familiar with natural, more healthy products and materiels.  I'm glad to hear about your kitchen and sure it will turn out well!

Bill, Thank you.  I hope things are well in your lovely part of the earth.

Gary, I was shocked...I think I still am!  A painter should know what VOC's and low oder or green means, so should carpet salesmen--it's their JOB.  They have lost not only my business but my clients.

Michelle, Thank you, it is taking forever.  I knew about Benjamin Moore but not Sherwin Williams and I told both the contractor and the people in the paint departments....and was still told to get them the exact name.  This to me is unacceptable--and sad that so many people are still unaware.

Cheryl, Sad that they don't want to be bothered.  One of the carpet people told me he'd been selling carpet for 30 years---I realized he obviously hadn't kept up with it :)

Kris, I don't understand how they have been missing it all these years.  I've been recommending these products to my clients for years, I never had a clue they would be difficult to find anyone with a knowledge of them--it's their job!

Jo, Progessing, but slowly...although I can tell you the carpet person will be in for not only my future business but my clients.  Friendly, helpful and knowledable.  I was in the smaller paint stores as well, they didn't know either.

Kathy, You're right on BOTH counts.  I have been referring these things for years to clients and they absolutely appreciate it.  And lazy isn't the word....why would I hire a contractor or work with a painter who can't be bothered looking it up on his own?

Marie, I had looked it up briefly, saw that Benjamin Moore has low VOC paints and went to large and small stores...they wouldn't bother to look it up to see the name.  They should already know it, I would have thought so anyway.

Donna, You are very right.  In one VERY large capet store near my home, it was empty when we went in.  Two men were sitting there.  It would seem to me especially if they had the time, they could certainly look into it, they had a computer.  Instead they sent me home to look it up---people don't realize sometimes the implications of poor customer service.

Fred, Thanks, it can be exhausting but I will be thrilled when it's done!  And it's certainly been a learning experience, thanks for the suggestion.  I hope you had a wonderful day as well.

Teri, I couldn't agree more.  It's their job.  On our jobs we go out of our way to help our clients, to keep up and to look into things we may not be aware of---they don't realize how much they can ruin a reputation from just one unhappy person.

Jennifer, I know...When that man told me he had been selling carpets for so long, I thought that doesn't mean it makes him GOOD at what he does.  I want to be good...or great at what I do!

Hi Carole,

It is sad to see the way the service industry is today. I think in some cases people are there only for the pay cheque, it is not about caring what they do or learning to be better. I am glad that you did find what you were looking for though!

Carole ... I agree ... they should know their product.  Benjamin Moore has had the low VOC for a while too.  I just don't get it!

It sounds like those salespeople were both rude and ignorant. While the average person may not understand what you were looking for, a person who works in that profession should. It is no wonder that going green is taking so long!

Liz, I hope you had a good time.  Gee, I feel ancient, I remember the original Get Smart!!

Trace, It is unbelievable...It's so simple.  Learn your job and then do it. Courtesy is SO simple.

Marie, I found out, Benjamin Moore's paint is called "Aura" --  Nice name.  But I had to find out on line!

Rich, I tried everything I could think of, they don't know what Green is....I had to wonder if they've heard of Al Gore.
