So what am I going to do now? Fleas are still present and house is listed.

Usually the time it takes to get an REO house listed drags on for a few weeks.  Usually you start wondering what happened to it.  Usually you'd have time to get it all prepared for showing with grass mowed and the house trashed out and cleaned.

Not this time.  I wrote a blog just a few days ago about the house having a flea infestation.  I went back to it just yesterday and saw the little boogers jump on my inserted white paper so I didn't go all the way in.  Then I see email with a listing come through.  I'm supposed to insert it in MLS and put it on the market!

I quickly fired off an email telling them the situation.  No answer.  REO people don't work on weekends and certainly not on long weekends.  So I have a listing.  It still has fleas.  It hasn't been visited by the FAS people who mow and clean.

I probably already got demerits for being late on returning the bpo because of fleas.  Now I will get additional demerits for being late inserting the listing. Perhaps the thing to do is just put in in MLS, write in small print to watch out for fleas and sit outside and watch!  Or for more fun, put it on the MLS tour so that all agents will visit.

Oh, shut up, Barbara.  You're hallucinating.

Barbara - you can make sure that you only invite those "special" agents in for the tour. You know, the ones that you just hate love to deal with.

Barbara, it's called "Bug Bomb"!  Get a few and zap the little suckers!  Nothing like flea bites to help buyers fall in love with a house.

Mike, that's when I started hallucinating.  Just thinking of a few of those favorites going in and coming out clawing was enough to set me off.  LOL

Patricia, is that the name of a potion, like Love Potion # 9, or is that a real bug killer?

Mike,

We live out in the country. Every now and then an opossum or raccoon gets to be a problem so I use a have-a-heart trap , catch them and deposit them at "special folks front yard"   just kidding...but seriously fleas are the worst thing an agent can go through. The Bombs are good but you must find the source , the hosts.  Could there be a raccoon, cat, rat, or dog at the property?....... Agents don't want to be the host!

Trey, the source, reported by the neighbor, was three cats who lived inside.  And evidently the owners of the three cats.  All have now moved and the fleas are royally annoyed that their food source up and left.  At least that's my analysis.

Barbara, its time to play hard ball.  Tell them dang fleas to "make an offer" or you will have to make them an offer they can't refuse:) In the old days, people when they had been away from home a long time would let the sheep in the house and they would collect all the fleas and then they would send the sheep back to pasture. Maybe you have to go buy a whole bunch of oranges:)

I believe Patricia was referring to a aerosol fogger product, one which may go under that name, so that you can use to start de-flea the property.  I found the following after googling flea infestation, which should tell you what you need.  Please these cans inside a couple of the doors and be sure to post a warning on every door.

Purchase a chemical agent that has as ingredients both Fipronil (sometimes spelled Phipronil) and Methroprene. As well as a mouth cover, such as is used when painting. The chemical you are looking for comes in an aerosol container and usually covers about 1600 square feet, if your home is larger than this more than one can may be needed. In some cases you must find a local pest controlsupplier to find these chemicals, the most common of which are called PreCor 2000 and Ultracide.

Charlie, is that true about the sheep??  No kidding???  I think I could borrow my neighbor's dog and leave it in the house for an hour or two......I have just gone to the Dollar Store and bought 3 cans of spray.  Now if I can get my courage up to go in and set them off.  The warnings on them are almost worse than the fleas.  Oranges are out of the question!

AJ & Jodee, I am now armed with some spray cans and plan to go over.  I don't believe it is what you recommended, however.  They only cover 625 sq. ft. so I'll need to run in and set them all off quickly.  What a way to spend a holiday!

Debi, this is actually my first experience with fleas in many years.  I don't know how the people who lived there let them get so bad.

Barbara,

Best thing I know to do, as I guy who has had cats or dogs, squirrels and raccoons now, for 40 years, is to buy flea bombs. You put them on a paper in the house -- vacant I hope. You set them off per the manufacturers directions. You turn then on and get the HEdoubleL out. Come back a few hours later. If there is furniture, cusions on couches, flip those over and off. It is a pain and sometimes takes more than once.

Barbara, I cannot personally attest to the sheep folklore----but who knows.  By the way----is this whole flea business another one of the hidden costs of pets in homes?

Barbara, hold an agent open house and invite all of your enemies friends.  :)

Seriously though, best of luck on this one.  I probably would have taken my chances on demerits with the REO company before I put it in the MLS.  Let us know how it turns out.

Barbara, Interesting dilemma. I guess you could try all of the above. Something is bound to work. Good luck...

Steven, I put three bombs in the house yesterday.  No furniture is there.  I'll cautiously step in today and see what it looks like.

Charles, I liked the sheep story, true or not.  I was taught that animals belong outside.  Guess I still feel that way.  But I've seen friends become attached to little pets when they were taught the same as I.  What I don't understand is how they live with the HUGE ones!  Or with fleas as this family was living.

Kristina, your first plan does sound enticing.  Thanks for comments.

Michael, thanks for your comment.

Wow you have quite a situation on your hands, I would list and go from there, possibly use a fogger to get rid of the fleas.

Freddie, I never dreamed fleas were that difficult to get rid of!  They were allowed to stay too long, I guess.

Barbara,

Buy a few foggers and bomb the place.

You might have to do it twice in one day, but most of the time it works. You might even have to hire a carpet cleaner after to suck up all the little eggs :-)

Good luck...

Mario, thanks.  I set off three yesterday and they are somewhat better but I still found some on me back in the car.  UGH!

Tony, it wasn't me with the sign....at least that I know of.  It's all just part of the job.  Never a dull moment.
