Best Places to Sunset Watch in Carlsbad California and Nearby

Watching the California sun set over the ocean is a breathtaking experience...at least when the sky has not covered up the sun.

Sunset Watching in Carlsbad

While a completely clear sky and a setting sun is beautiful, seeing the sun sink below the horizon on a day with some clouds can result in incredible colors.

I have yet to actually see the green flash that can occur on a clear day at the horizon just as the sun dips below the water, but have it from reputable folks that it DOES occur and it IS amazing to see. Some day perhaps!

So where do you go to watch the sun set in Carlsbad, or nearby?

Here are my favorites. Mind you, this is my opinion, and I certainly haven't seen every spot along the North San Diego coastline. But we're working on it.

The walkway along the Coast Highway (Route 101, a.k.a. Carlsbad Boulevard) just south of Carlsbad Village

South Carlsbad State Beach

At the top of the steps (or the landing) leading to Grandview Beach in Leucadia (Encinitas), watching through the palm trees

At the top of Beacon's Beach along Neptune in Encinitas - a favorite of many sunset watchers, there are always fpeople there checking out the surfers, the ocean and of course beautiful sunsets. Check out the live cam (be aware it's not always working, however).

Sitting on the sand or at a picnic table at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas; or from the parking lot or observation area.

Sunset at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas California

At the top of the stairs at Swami's Beach in South Encinitas

In the upstairs bar/lounge area at the Pacific Coast Grill or the Chart House in Cardiff by the Sea - what could be better? A great glass of wine, tasty appetizers, a gorgeous sunset, and someone you care about. Better yet - celebrate a special occasion ON THE BEACH with a catered dinner as my wife did for our anniversary.

The Torrey Pines Hang-Gliderport in La Jolla

The top of Mt. Soledad in La Jolla at the Veterans' War Memorial Park (videos) with incredible views in ALL directions.

Ocean Boulevard along the beach in Pacific Beach - the bar at JRDN (a hip beach-side restaurant at the hotel Tower 23), I understand, is really special. It sure looks pretty cool!

Got some favorites of your own? Please share yours so we can all enjoy, and perhaps check them out.

Great pics. We don't have a 'best place to watch the sun set" in Los Gatos - it just slips behind the mountains. But at the beach - now that's a lovely sight!

I've never been to Cali. It's on my list of places to visit some day. I just have to decide exactly where I want to visit. I'm not big on traffic an huge crowds, so I know L.A. is out of the question. Any suggestions?

Jeff, the sunset was perfectly gorgeous. I never heard of green flash...I wish you would get a picture of that or discuss it more...that's a first.

Tonight coming home from showing homes in Roseville, I saw the huge sunset while driving and it was a beauty.

Loved the video...love the water and love Carlsbad, CA...Jeff Dowler's territory!

Jeff,

Another wonderful example of a good localism post. You make us proud. Loved the sunset photos and your presentation of such using slide. Keep up the good work associate.

Jeff,

I think I've mentioned to you that I almost purchased a home years ago in Carlsbad.  I recall it a delightful sleepy small town.  I know things are far different now.

Jeff - I love sunsets and they are ever changing and beautiful. I have seen the green flash before, and if there are any clouds, you typically will not see it. My favorite picture is the one with the lifeguard tower (my daughter is a Huntington State beach lifeguard). Great post.

Hi Jeff - beautiful pictures!!  I love beaches and sunsets, and I really enjoyed your shows.  We have beautiful sunsets here, too, but we're looking inland to watch them.  Our sunrises are just breathtaking on the other hand!  ;-)

I miss San Diego North County!  The U.S. Marines shipped me there in 1979 and I left SoCal a few years ago, but miss the beaches.  While in the Marines I lived on The Strand in Oceanside.  Amazing sunsets there. I still hold an inactive contractor's license there (555251), just in case I return!  Nice post Jeff, and I enjoyed revisiting the sunsets!

Thanks, Teresa - I remember some gorgeous clear skies in the middle of winter but liked enjoying them from indoors.

Tim - yep, have been there too. The list keeps growing.
