My friend Brian Block sent me a little package the other day. I opened it to find a copy of my post from July.... The Gong Show Returns! along with a miniature gong, gonger (the think that hits the gong) and a gong book of uses.  I crack up.

Who remembers "THE GONG SHOW"?

The book said that you shouldn't use the gong for some of these purposes: in a library, at a best friends wedding, at a funeral, your first date, when your boss is speaking and so forth. Yup, I do believe those may be causes to lose friends and your job lol!

Okay, but I do believe it serves some great purposes as well. I didn't have a gong back when I wrote the post so NOW I can actually give you all a complete run down on USES For a Gong.

~~~
Real Estate Gong:
  • Call the agent who did not show up....nor call to let you know that they were not going to your listing for that showing appointment. You call the agent when your seller calls all furious because they were waiting so they could coook dinner.....and GONG my gong in their ear for being so rude.
  • The agent who insists on not letting me get a word in edgewise because all that matters is THEM. The ME Syndrome strikes again...until I GONG my gong to ruin the moment.
  • The Seller who continuously complains about everyone that comes to their home to look, the times they look, the things they say and how they are NOT going to accept any offer below the list price nor give credit for anything. A reality check GONG is in order here because it's been on the market for a couple months and no one is putting in an offer.
  • The Buyer who continuously acts like they are the killer negotiator and that nothing I do is going to convince them that I know my stuff well. A GONG is in order here as well as moving on to the next client.
  • The lender who knows our lives are in their hands and dilly dallies around drawing docs until the very last minute....knowing there's a loan lock expiration date ..... in two days. A BIG GONG for both me, my client and the loan officer. I think this one I have to do it in my head or they might just take even longer.
Blogging Gong:
  • The dashboard hog who continuously posts so they can be on top of your subscribed list. Nothing but the ME SYNDROME going on and the GONG bangs it's blatant tune to drown out the boring stats that transfered to the Localism site.
  • The blogger who really has nothing pleasant to say and only wants to be heard. The GONG arises to cut that negative drone out with it's own dull.....GONG!
  • The shoving a topic down our 'throats' posts.... the click of the mouse and a GONGing that Gong comes to mind.
  • Disrespecting another blogger in a comment section and disregarding our community and group guidelines. They deserve a delete and a GONG to boot!
  • Using the group email system to spam everyone about their post they just wrote. Once in awhile for a worthy cause is all right...but every day?  Yup, the GONG needs to bang here for obvious reasons.
  • Making excuses why it's all right to send solicitations through our contact form Just because we are on the internet does not mean we are wanting to be solicited. Where'd they get that idea? GONG...and a push of the button on my cell ending the call.
  • Two sentences and a picture....and the rest is their slogan for advertising. And then post it to Localism like it's the great area post of all time. GONG for me and everyone else who spend countless hours creating a great Localism masterpiece (at least I thought mine was lol) Anyway, a BIG GONG for no content.
  • Two sentences and rerouting their post (actually, many posts) to their outside blog after posting to ActiveRain AND Localism. Now tell me....doesn't that deserve a GONG?
  • Copy/pasting MLS listings and stats....and then posting to Localism like it was their own. GONG on that junk!
  • Copy /pasting someone else's post and pictures that you have no permission to do so.  Remember, plagiarism includes your using pictures and writing that is NOT yours. (snippets to refer are okay when giving credit but taking and giving credit without proper authorization is grounds for your getting sued)  GONG on taking stuff that is not yours!
gongPersonal Gong:
  • When the husband expects you to cook after showing property all day. GONG! (good thing Gary loves to cook :)
  • When the kids and all the relatives think you're rich and have no taxes to pay. GONG!
  • When I go out taking video and expect everyone around me to be quiet. GONG!
  • When I expect all of you to be just like me and GONG for all the reasons I would.
  • When being positive means I let you run all over me.....GONG A RONI!
Instead....why don't you all add to this list in the comment section....that ought to bring 'enlightenment'.
NOTE:  My son is going to be 28 but when he was 3 yrs. my mom took him to Kauai (her birth place) for the 50th death anniversary of her father. (Japanese thing). My son came home and told me, "Mom, it was cool!  They had a band and everything!" (The reverend was banging the gong LOL!)
Thanks to Brian Block ....for without this gong from him this post may not have been possible :)
People that write long comments and tell you to come/go to their Post to read what they wrote.....look at me, my Post is better than your Post....my post is better than yours(sung to the tune of my dog's better than yours....that flea commercial.... LOL :)  Yep Gong them....or maybe we should just go get some Kennel Ration for them :) :)
Sally-having lived in Japan for 3.5 years I learned a think or two about gong usage.  With the right tone and beat it can be soothing.  The gong show however not so much.  Your lists are right on.
Everyone said they hated the Gong Show, but look how many watch American Idol and America's Got Talent, just modern day Gong Shows. With the dilly dallying lender, put their head inside the gong first, ok?
 hi Sally, I won't go off on a rant like I did on Jeff Belonger's point whore post but re "The dashboard hog who continuously posts so they can be on top of your subscribed list"...
 And/or the people who've gotten into the habit of posting 5 times within one afternoon. Not sure if this happens in other groups but it's become a trend in mine and rather than getting attention or deleted, now we just ignore them.
 Re "The shoving a topic down our 'throats' posts"...
 Oh yes, and the "here's my thing to stick on your car" post again. Please tell us one more time about your amazing product. I didn't get the point the first 25 times you told me about it this week. Like really???
Sally, your posts are the most fun!  And I'm enjoying the conversation going on in your comments section too.
Several months ago, an agent I never heard of showed up and rose to the top of the list of agents in my area.  I figured I'd better read his blog and find out more about him.  Thought I knew all my local agents who are really active.  He had lots of posts, no comments.  His posts were each just a few sentences copied verbatim from the California Real Estate Law Book put out by the Dept of Real Estate.  Gong!  After that initial spurt, nothing posted and still no comments.  Gong again!
This is fun!
Wait a minute.  You do NOT have a son 28.  Can't be.
hmm. I don't know what to add to your list...ok, how's about when you go to send paperwork at the office and the machine jams up right when it's trying to give you your fax comfirmation and on top of that you're in a rush...or for that matter gong for anytime technology fails us and ESPECIALLY when we're in a rush!
Morning Sally,
I too remember the gong show and was so happy when they took it off the air. Thanks for a fun start of the day.
My addition to the gong list, a reminder at homecoming after a long day at the office, "The lawn needs to be cut!"  GONG! "So hire a lawnboy!"
Have a great weekend.
Loved the Gong show Sally!  BB is a doll for sending you that gift.
My business gong goes to sellers who put the house on the market then limit severely the times the house can be shown.( Understood about animals and crazy work hours but if you can only see a house between 2 and 4 on Saturday I don't think it will sell)
AR Gong goes to Bloggers who don't take the time to acknowledge comments.  Sometimes it is overwhelming but I think it should at least merit a group thank you.
Personal Gong goes to my family who at ties still think I am an at home mom who can get all the work I used to done.  They are wrong and it is not my fault that there are no clean socks in the drawer!!!
I think today's version of the Gong Show is the audition episodes of American Idol.  For those too young to remember Chuck Barry's Gong Show, they had some pretty talented acts, but they also had a lot of weird ones.  Analogizing to some AR bloggers is dangerous, because with too many details, you will know who I am talking about.  Suffice it to say that we have mostly talented and helpful folk here, but we also have some weird ones. Gong!
Sorry you're sick, Sally.  Get better fast!
  Woo-Hoo: I'm surprised you didn't get a feature with this post.  I so agree with most of your points that SHOULD be GONGED, but especially:
  • The Seller who continuously complains
  • The shoving a topic down our 'throats' posts
  • Copy /pasting someone else's post and pictures that you have no permission to do so (which goes with the above)....
You forgot one, though....THE LISTING AGENT THAT NEVER RETURNS CALLS.
I think AR should ADD a GONG Button on the TOOLBAR!  LOL
