La Jolla, California
Video Tour of this Jewel by the Sea
La Jolla, California, a few miles north of San Diego, is an incredibly beautiful community nestled along the blue Pacific, with terrific views of the ocean and the Southern California coastline. The town has been compared to the Amalfi Coast in Southern Italy, with homes cascading down the hillsides to meet the sea, but with its own Southern California caché.

In addition to the beautiful, and expensive, ocean-view homes (the median price is over $1.5 million) clustered along the hills, La Jolla has a worldwide reputation for dining and shopping, with the bulk of the trendy shops, boutiques, galleries, jewelry stores, fine dining and upscale hotels lining Prospect Street, many with views of La Jolla Cove and the ocean beyond.
A tour through La Jolla on foot is a delight for the eyes, even if one's pocketbook groans at times. Traffic and parking are a challenge, especially in the summer and on weekends, but don't despair...taking your time is part of the pleasure, and if you don't mind walking a bit, side streets also offer places to leave your car to explore. A number of the dining establishments offer valet parking to make life easier, if not a bit more costly (well worth it, IMO, unless you are spending more time).
Favorite restaurants include George's at the Cove, Roppongi (sushi) and the Marine Room. You can find more places to dine at here.
Planning to stay overnight and pamper yourself? La Valencia Hotel is topnotch, as is the Hotel Parisi and the Grand Colonial.
Shopping is, well, over-the-top. No way can I begin to outline the stores, so check out the official La Jolla by the Sea website.
If you can't visit La Jolla live, or just want a taste of life, here's a short video.
