In Hawai'i the channels in which gossip flows with seemingly instantaneous delivery is called the Coconut Wireless. Rumor's and gossip can travel quickly through island communities as conversations are overheard at the gym, while dinning out, standing in line for poké at the Superette, idly chatting during intermission at the theatre, or at the ever popular corporate rumor milling water cooler.  This edition of Coconut Wireless poses the question "What's up with the 801 South Street, project?” In May of last year construction was abruptly stopped on Tower B of the twin tower development. State Circuit Court Judge Karl Sakamoto issued a preliminary injunction that halted Tower B construction after it was determined that two state agencies failed to follow state law protecting historic pl...

Let the concrete pour, the Gray Lady with her ever expanding petrified petticoats of pavement. Happy Derby Dayand the 141st. Running of the Kentucky Day! HO'OMAIKA'I ANA - CONGRATULATIONS - AMERICAN PHAROH - Derby Favorite and Winner!Horse racing was a favorite sport in Hawai’i during the late 19th and early 20th century attracting the attention of Hawaiian royalty, rich landowners, and the working class alike. With horse racing tracks on several of the islands, the sport died out in Hawaii by the 1950's. There have been several proposals to return horse racing to Hawaii but there has been strong resistance to bringing any form of legalized gambling back to Hawai’I nei.   Honolulu residents enjoy a day at the races in Kapiolani Park.  Kapiolani Park Racetrack (1883-1914)  Oahu's Kapiolani Park opened in 1883.   A'ea'e mohala i luna o ke kukui - Whiteness unfolds on the kukui trees. Used in reference to a person who grays, comparing him to a blooming kukui tree laden with white flowers Hawai'i has a very rich tradition of proverbs and poetical sayings and 'Olelo No'eau is Hawai'i's compendium of pithy oral gems. Collected and translated by renowned linguist Mary Kawena Pukui, Olelo No'eau offers a glimpse at ancient Hawai'i's profound understanding and tawny sense of humor toward the human condition, it's love of literary techniques from allegories to analogies, irony, puns, metaphor, and the double entendre to a full line up of ephitets, jokes, adages, riddles, and aphorisms. Kukui or Candlenut blossoms in full bloom. When it comes to the Ancient Hawaiian understanding of aging, going gray w...

Kiele (Gardenia augusta) Common Name: Gardenia Introduced Post-Contact: Native to Southern China.      In Hawaiian the word for fragrant blossom is Kiele, and it just happens to be the name that Hawaiians gave to the Gardenia when it was first imported to Hawai'i from the far east. We do have our own indigenous gardenia variety, called Nanu (Gardenia brighamii) here in Hawai'i but just not as pungent. Gardenia hedges are popular in Honolulu and one of my favorite Lei's is the Lei Kiele.  Nanu (Gardenia brighamii)  It is Hawaiian custom to add flowering hedges, trees, and shrubs that are popular for lei making close to the Hale or home. The purpose was not only to beautify the home environment but provide easy access to blossoms for lei construction. Back in the day,  anticipating a spe...
