orlando: The Power of the Word "No" - 07/17/11 02:51 PM
They say big things come in small packages and not to judge a book by it's cover.  We can always see the size of the dog in a fight- yet can't always see the amount of fight that's in a dog.  Same premises also apply when I contemplate The Power of the Word "No".
The word raised it's ugly head today, as I had a lady wanting me to show her a property I have listed- on the Lord's day, on about an hour's notice.  My answer to her?  "No".  That didn't go over too well, as she rambled on with … (6 comments)

orlando: We Miss You, Casey Anthony! - 07/16/11 09:52 PM
Man, it seems like only yesterday that you left, Casey.  Oh, wait- that was today.  It seems like forever since we saw your face...or not. Oh, how we long to see the mug of The City Beautiful's most famous acquitted child killer plastered across our newspaper and TV headlines every day....oh, good- it's still there.
Come back!  We Miss You, Casey Anthony!
But then again- don't- because we don't.
May the good Lord God above bless and keep Caylee Marie Anthony today and every day, and may God bless George and Cindy Anthony- soon returning some sense of normalcy to Hopespring Drive.

Aloma Church, 1815 State Road 436, Winter Park, FL  32792
Aloma Church (or Aloma Baptist Church) is where I've attended services for around 4 1/2 years.  I've seen a number of business reviews on here (and I've written a couple)- but if I one can offer reviews of Waffle Houses, Burger Kings, other local eateries and repair shops- why not offer a review of (and recommendation for) one of the most important places in my life?
Attending a new church can be a difficult situation- deciding whether a particular one is for you or if you need to move along to … (0 comments)

orlando: ORRA Leadership Institute, Day 4: Graduation Day - 07/09/11 02:58 PM
Graduation Day has arrived for the Class of 2011, Orlando Regional Realtors Association (ORRA) Leadership Institute
...and that class includes one Dennis Burgess.
When I initially read the course description, the thing looked interesting.  In looking to get more value out of every penny these days, I thought that the worst I could do was spend $25 on the thing, get in 4 days of schoolin' and socializin'- and enjoy the free lunch and continental-style breakfast they were servin' up.
With the class behind me now and diploma...err...certificate in hand, I can say one thing:  I can't imagine there's a better … (0 comments)

orlando: Tito's Pipe & Drain, Inc., Altamonte Springs, FL 32701 (407) 331-8486 - 07/04/11 10:43 AM
Tito's Pipe & Drain, Inc., Altamonte Springs, FL  32701 (407) 331-8486
I've used a number of vendors in the last 10 years- appliance folks, pool guys, electricians, painters, roofers, carpet cleaners, general cleaning folks and more lawn guys than I can remember.  Some have been great, some good, some fair and a few that were nothing short of pitiful.  We all know the stories of the jacklegs that prey on the unsuspecting and wary alike.
Tito's Pipe & Drain, Inc., Altamonte Springs, FL  32701 (407) 331-8486 is the exception.  I can say unequivocally that Tito, the owner of the company, is … (1 comments)

orlando: I'm Dennis Burgess- the best property manager in Orlando - 06/26/11 08:34 PM
I'm Dennis Burgess- the best property manager in Orlando.  No- the best property manager in the world!
There are a lot of other property managers around here- but none are as good as I am, the best property manager in Orlando.  I even took a poll to confirm it- and yes, 1 out of 1 Dennis Burgesses surveyed confirmed it.  The respondent pool was small- and the poll wasn't really scientific in its use of the "Is Dennis Burgess the best property manager in Orlando?" question and "yes" or "no" checkboxes- but I'm thinking the margin of error here is very … (8 comments)

orlando: ORRA Leadership Institute: Day 1 - 06/24/11 02:33 PM
A guy wearing a cowboy hat.... Once a year, the Orlando Regional Realtor Association (ORRA) conducts a Leadership Institute course- it's a 4-day course designed to provide- you guessed it- leadership training.  It's a required course for folks holding any aspirations for the higher offices of our association.  It's a course I stumbled upon at the last minute, really, but one I just couldn't pass up after reading it's curriculum.
Today was Day 1, and there I was- me and a guy wearing a cowboy hat.  This was no John Wayne or Ponderosa-style hat like Hoss or Little Joe wore, mind you- … (2 comments)

orlando: Mailbox #47 - 06/23/11 10:50 AM

Dear Mr. Postman...or post-lady..or post-person (whatever y'all are called these days),

It's me, Mailbox #47.  Nobody's been around for about a week- and I'm probably as frustrated as you are about it.  You've been filling me up with stuff that I know my owner doesn't want- 'cause I see the owners of other mailboxes have thrown the same stuff in the big trash can over there against the fence.

"Dear Mailbox #47" this, "Attention Mailbox #47" that- all of those grocery store flyers sure are cool- but then again, they're over there in the … (4 comments)

orlando: "Hey, Showing Lady: Can you leave my A/C on? It's pretty danged hot." - 06/16/11 11:26 AM
.

Like many areas of the country, it's pretty danged hot around here. For the benefit of those in other parts of the country (and surely some folks around here not quite as countrified as I), "pretty danged hot" is past "kinda hot"- but just a bit shy of "really danged hot". But this is Orlando in mid-June rather than Maine in mid-June- so I guess it shouldn't come as any big shocker. So tell me this, Showing Lady: Can you leave the A/C on at my listing? I appreciate you going all "Save the Watts" nuts and everything, but … (24 comments)

orlando: "Dear fellow Realtor: It's only $100....so please pay me!" - 06/02/11 06:58 PM
Dear fellow Orlando-area Realtor,
Remember me? Back in February (yes, February), I had a really strong client that was looking at a few properties with me. I showed the gentleman half of the couple a nice Windermere place- a memorable showing more so for the fact that it started off with our watching the sky for a space shuttle streaming past than for any result of the actual showing. The property was a good one, but the back yard was a bit smaller than the client was looking for, and the man (let's call him "M.L.") wanted to know what else … (17 comments)

orlando: Evil comes to town Friday morning - 04/25/11 12:36 PM
Evil's coming to town this Friday morning- cloaked under the veil that's known as the Westboro Baptist Church.
For some reason, Fred Phelps and his merry band of misfits have decided to throw one of their picketing shindigs in front of Dr. Phillips High School- just 4 short miles from my office. I haven't firmed up my Friday schedule just yet, so I can't say whether I'll be joining them. But then again...it appears that I won't have time to be there.
And I sure hate that I'm going to miss the get-together. I've had my "God hates ______" posters drawn … (4 comments)

orlando: The last straw.... - 04/21/11 09:46 AM
Why is it that "the last straw" is never a good thing? I never really thought about it prior to yesterday, but the proverbial "last straw" is always bad. You never hear someone say "That's the last straw- I'm going to give you $100!", never hear "That's it, the last straw. I'm giving you a promotion AND a raise!" Nope, don't hear it. And I can't remember ever hearing "That's the last straw! I'm going to call that guy up and compliment him!" Uhhh...nope.

Yesterday, it was an actual "last straw" that got me thinking. A simple trip to McDonald's for a … (12 comments)

orlando: Orlando Market Pulse February 2011 - 02/14/11 08:22 AM
It seems that the more things change, the more they stay the same.  And I remember thinking "Wow!" when the number hit 50%!
Bank-owned, short-sale properties account for a record 75 percent of home sales
(February 14, 2011 - Orlando, FL) Members of the Orlando Regional REALTOR® Association reported a 7.14 percent year-over-year increase in the number (1,950) of home sales January 2011, with a record-breaking percent of those transactions involving either bank-owned or short-sale homes.
The lower median prices of bank-owned and short sales, which accounted for 75.03 percent of all sales in January, exert a downward influence on … (0 comments)
