This is the first in my new Did you know? series. This series will be mostly about San Diego, but occasionally I might visit other areas in Southern California, California, and the United States, the world, and the universe. I hope to make this series about the little known things, little known but interesting. I hope you enjoy it. Most of the pictures that I'll use in this series are from California was founded right here in San Diego with the establishment of Mission San Diego de Alcala on July 16, 1769. Did you know that the first American ship to enter the San Diego Bay was the brig Betsy? A brig is a sailing ship with two square-rigged masts like this one, the Lady Washington (picture courtesy of Wikipedia): ♫♪♫♫♪♫ If you're looking for a great real estate agent in San Diego, well, I'm available 24/7, so feel free to contact me by phone or email. Meanwhile, over on the East Coast, thirteen British colonies were having a little brouhaha with the Crown of England. Almost exactly seven years later, the United States was founded on July 4, 1776, with those thirteen colonies becoming the thirteen original states. But....
Besty arrived in San Diego on August 25, 1800, to find a small town of just a couple of hundred people. The Betsy stayed just long enough to take on wood and water, as well as otter pelts to be taken to China for trade.

I really enjoyed your blog. The information is interesting and should be to everyone whether they live in California or not.
Jim, great tidbit of San Diego History. I love it. Now to be a wisenheimer did Rusell take the picture of the Betsy? I did not know he was around that time:)))))))))))
Hi Jim, thanks for the information. Like the pictures of the church and ship.
Jim....Nice blog and very interesting information. I think it's fun to learn little known facts and how they came about.
Hey, everyone!
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
I've been very busy, but today I'm trying to follow up on these older posts like this one to see if anyone had any questions or if I really need to respond to anyone's comments.
I will read all the comments and respond to any that need a response, but since this post is rather old, rather than making comments here in my post to each and every one of you, I'll just let everyone know that I have read all the comments and if there are any questions, I'll answer those in comments below this one. Otherwise I'll simply post this comment and then head over to your blogs soon to visit and do some reading and commenting. I hope you'll have a nice welcome mat out for me!
Don't forget to let your cat come out to play with all the other ActiveRain kitties. Your cat-friendly dogs can come, too!
If you need a great cat book, get yourself a copy of Peg Silloway's The Cat Lover's Book of Days.
Hope all is well with everyone.
