Do You Network? Here's How To Maximize Your Efforts

Networking - how to maximize your efforts

Yesterday, we wrote about great ways to get new business, and discussed different types of groups that will allow you to network with other like-minded business professionals. We discussed the importance of face-to-face networking and gave specific examples of where to go to join, including formal networking groups like BNI and your local Chamber of Commerce.

Today, I will share some tips on how you can get the most out of your involvement with a group. While we spoke specifically about networking groups, these same principals can be applied for any type of networking that you do.

1.     Set Realistic Expectations - Many people join a group thinking that business will automatically come to them, and then get frustrated and quit after a short period of time. Give yourself at least 1 year. Building relationships takes time, so you need to be patient.

2.     Get Involved - Showing up to an event or meeting every once in a while is a waste of time. You need to get involved. Join a committee, take on responsibility, do things to demonstrate to others what type of professional you are. Think of the show "The Apprentice" in that you are showing people what you are all about, and if they like what they see, they will "hire you" as their agent should they need you.

3.     Don't Spread Yourself Too Thin - I have seen people join a ton of groups all at once, hoping one of them ends up being good.  This tactic can be counter-productive as you will quickly find yourself unable to keep up with all of them. You are better off finding a group you like and build relationships there.

4.     Re-Evaluate Periodically - At least once a year, see if your time and effort is worth being part of a specific group. If you see no value, perhaps try another group. On the other hand, if you are getting a lot of business from a particular organization, you may want to increase your involvement there.

5.    Concentrate On Helping Others - Have a mindset of trying to help other people and good things will happen. Too many people join a group and think only about themselves. This may be hard, but focus on other people.

Many people go into networking situations looking for a "quick hit" and end up giving up when they don't get business right away. This is a big reason why most groups don't have a lot of real estate agents ( I don't mean to be negative here, but it's the truth ).

The good news is that opportunity exists for those willing to put in the time and effort.  Join a group, follow these tips and your efforts will be rewarded.

Hello Dan and Amy, Great post. I think I am the one who spreads herself to thin, I will work on that this year. I also better when we help others, it not only comes back to us but it is rewarding doing it.

This is a super post.  We are members of 2 BNI groups and I have Women's Council of Realtors and a couple of monthly women's groups.  I've been finding it works best in the groups that I go to repeatedly and get ot know the people and see them often.  I'm finding some of the more "random" evening events not so efficient for me.  So, I've been dropping those and instead doing a few targeted mtgs (at their offices) - complementary places such as restoration, painters, designers, etc.

Arleen - Thanks so much for stopping by. I used to spread myself too thin, but have scaled back over the last few years.

Debbie - BNI works great, as do the smaller group settings. Sounds like you're doing all the right things and I'm sure it has paid off. Thank you for commenting.

Dan/Amy, You summed it up so well, can't join a group if you don't have time to be truly involved or have the spirit to help.  I am guilty of spreading myself too thin.  The good thing here, is we have a lot of social groups and that's where we are involved the most - you end up meeting a lot of people and you are doing something fun - like Cycling.

Dan & Amy, I think that we have to join groups with an expectation of contribution versus scoring a quick transaction.  I agree that we should re-evaluate all lead generation programs at 6 and then 12 months.  Thanks for the post, it's a very timely reminder that I need to get out there more this year to hit my 2011 goals.

Ellie - I think it's important to join something that you enjoy, otherwise, what's the point? The networking groups are good for those who enjoy that, but social groups are just as effective. Thanks for commenting.

Keith - Thanks so much for reading. We need to be a little more consistent this year. There was a point when we did too much networking and spread ourselves thin, so finding that balance is key.
