Questions for my Active Rain Friends-

OK, so our little guy, 8 yrs old and I are going to see our new grand child, a gorgeous baby girl who was born on October 1st and our eldest son is the father. We are going to a very cold part of Canada in Regina.

Our little guy is the only one in our family who has never seen or lived in snow. I just found out the it is 30 degrees BELOW ZERO!!!!!!! Where we are going!!!!!!

My son just told our little one how they don't even allow their children to go play in the snow when it is this cold. Of course the little guy has nothing to relate this to and was crying because he wants to build a snow man. I told him that if he starts turning purple, inside he goes!

Now, down here in Florida we don't even have items to purchase for the severe cold weather. We moved here from Seattle 15 years ago, the longest I ever lived in one place. I lived in Hawaii, Utah, California, and all over Europe and most places in Asia. We would go in the winter to Jackson Hole Wyoming every year when we lived in Utah so we know snow. We know all about it. However in 15 years there is no way that we have any cold weather items left. In fact, when we moved from Seattle we gave all of our winter clothing to others who needed it there.

We did find some ski socks at Sports Authority and we have found thermal under clothing.

What do you who live in this kind of weather recommend for outer wear and foot wear for us? We are only going to be there for a week and then we won't have use for the clothing after that so we don't want to go through a huge expense. I would rather use our funds to help our son and his family because things like baby clothes are quite expensive in Canada.

I will also be talking to people who live and work in Canada as we will be staying with our son and not in a hotel. I want to show our son how people live in different countries and different economic scales. My parents provided me with many wonderful cultural experiences in many places of the world and we passed that on to our children. Since we homeschooled our kids we had the freedom to travel with them to many countries and states.

We get our news from around the world seldom getting our news from U.S media these days. THe view point from the rest of the world helps me to understand a wider perspective. I have been gathering some research because I plan to write about Canada when I get back. Hopefully I can write some while I am there after I read their laws on what we can write and can not write:)

Katerina - enjoy your time in the snow and have your son wear lots of layers of clothing.  When I go to Germany and it is cold I usually borrow family members clothing. Enjoy your time with your little grandbaby :)

For thermal underwear you should consider: http://www.underarmour.com  Their products were adopted by the army for cold weather excercises due to how well it insulates.

My advice is, go in the summer! I know,I know not pertinent to the conversation but I really hate that kind of cold and would worry like crazy about a little guy. But I suppose lots of little guys live there, quite successfully.

The handwarmers that skiers use are really helpful when i walk the dogs in really cold weather.  You can use them in boots too.

Most of your heat escapes from your head - so earmuffs and hats! also a muffler that covers the face.  LAYERS work better than one thick sweater....

Where on earth are you going?  The North Pole?

LOL on Ruthmarie's comment.  Can't stop laughing, esp since I can literally hera her saying it.

A lot of great advice above.  i would ask you son for help to borrow stuff for the week and then supplement what may be specific (e.g. boots).  Layers are the way to go and agree to cover head/hands.  mittens better than gloves.

Remember, once he's cold, he won't stay out there that long.  He think he will, but he won't.  All of us northerners get cold fast and want to go inside...it will feel even colder to you guys flying up from the south.

Borrow or go to a 2nd hand store for the items you might need... then donate them back when you are done!  I am completely without cold-weather gear myself!   Kathy

Hi Katerina. I lived in the cold and visited Philadelphia but it was never 30 below LOL I layered, wore a hat and gloves, and water repellent boots to keep my feet warm. Hope your son has fun the times he goes out in the snow.

Airports are heated in Canada, and you get off of the plane into a heated walk way.  Cars also have heaters in them.

So you won't need heavy winter wear until you leave the airport.  Your son can probably drive right to the door to pick you up in a heated car...

Then you can head off to the nearest Good Will or second hand store and pick up some warm clothes.

Do get some warm clothes and have fun in the snow.  If you are dressed for it you can enjoy it... 8 year olds like to play in the snow.

Hope you have a great visit...

Hi Katerina - So you are going to visit us in the Great White North, eh? :)  A warm (actually coooollllllld) welcome!!!

Living in Toronto, we don't have minus 20 degree weather very frequently but the comments by others regarding layers, hats, mitts, gloves, earmuffs, snow boots, winter coat etc. all make sense.  Since your son wants to make snowmen, perhaps you should get a snowsuit or snowpants as well.

Perhaps you can get your older son to buy some basics, perhaps by visiting a local Walmart or you could have him take you there.  I just looked at www.walmart.ca (the Canadian site) and saw that there is a Walmart about a mile or so from the Regina International Airport.  Walmart is open 7 days a week in Regina from 7 am to 11 pm (except statutory holidays).

Remember to study the potash industry.  Saskatchewan is extremely well known for it.  Actually, it wasn't a well known commodity to most of us until relatively recently when the price of potash dramatically rose and there was a battle over purchasing a major Canadian potash producer by a couple of different foreign corporations.

Although I am not a lawyer, I have not seen any of your writings over the years that would cause me any concern, so feel free to blog away.  If you have any particular concerns, simply do not post certain articles until you are back in the USA.

YIKES!!  30 below.   My suggestion (and you won't like it) - wait until summer.  But then again meeting a new grand child is not something you would want to postpone.

I get freaked out with my head being covered up! Even when I lived in Utah and went to Wyoming all the time in the winters, I hated having my head covered. I will have to get used to this for a week!

Hi Katerina

My brother also lives in Naples, Florida and has three young boys, When they go to cold places she looks on craigs list for used winter clothing and usually gets a great deal.

Even a thrift shop may be a better option.

I am not so much concerned with cost but more so with waste. i don't like to waste money! And I don't feel comfortable going to a second hand store here where bugs are so prevalent and mites would love to live in the clothing and you never know how often people wash their winter clothing:)

I think that Marc #17 has the best idea since he also lives in Canada. My son said that right now we can get some great sales on winter clothing also. And the Walmart is a $12 cab fare from his home. They don't have a car. Our little son is going to learn how spoiled he really is! He is going to take public transportation and taxis:) Something he knows not a thing about! We arrive in the afternoon about 1:30 p.m. so there will be plenty of time to go to the Walmart before it gets too cold. Katerina
