How to Rake a Roof and Why

This winter has been very tough on Connecticut!  We have already far surpassed the normal amount of snow that we receive in any given season, and it is only the middle of January.  Last week I wrote a post titled Where is the Snow that Should Be on that Roof?, and felt quite proud of the fact that my roof was still covered in snow.

Today's forecast was for more snow and ice.  Not what I wanted to hear, because my roof is so well insulated and the temperatures have been so low, I still had all that snow on my roof.  Think of putting another three inches of snow on that plus a half inch of ice!  Time to borrow my neighbor's Roof Rake!

While it was impossible for me to reach all the areas of my roof, I was able to get quite a bit cleared so I should not have trouble with too much weight on the roof and ice damming.  Below is my work in progress.  Please cut me a little slack--this is my first video post ever.

My sympathy Chris!

We too were hit hard with 36" of snow in total...

Interesting idea - I never thought of "raking a roof"!

Thanks for sharing your roof rake information. I'm glad that we do not yet have that much snow in Maryland.

Chris,

You did a GREAT job on the video! I don't know how to do that, and I think you did it well, and the music selection for the roof raking was perfect! But the question that I'm dying to know is, how did your arms feel when you got done??? And what about your back?

That had to be a lot harder than raking leaves on the lawn. I think if I had to do what you did, my arms would have fallen off! Too bad they don't have a blower attached to the rake like those leaf blowers! Or better yet, too bad you couldn't train some squirrels to get up there and rake the roof for you!

Hi Joshua - Yes, you were in the same unfortunate snow band!  Let's hope that Friday's threat will miss us both!

Hi Wende - I wish I hadn't had to think of it either, but that much snow just has to go!

Hi Roy - I hope you avoid it completely this year!  I am waiting to see some great "icy plants" photos from you!

Hi Patricia - Thanks for your comments on the video!  It is a Flip camera, and comes with great software.  I am by no means an expert!

My back is fine; my arms are very sore, but that's to be expected.  With the lovely crust on the snow, a leaf blower wouldn't have been much use, and a small snowblower would have meant having to get on the roof (which I did for a while, and did not enjoy).

Chris, Those roof rakes really do a good job, but they are a lot of work. I'm glad that you got all the snow off of your roof.

Hi Gary - Yes, my arms are still feeling the effects of yesterday's raking! : ) I'm glad I was able to get off as much as I did because it got above freezing today and melted some; now we are not expecting temperatures above freezing for at least a week (mostly well below).

Hi Chris,

That is a TON of snow!  Wow.  Great video demonstration.  I love the choice of music too.

Thanks so much for you encouragement--video is daunting, but really quite easy with a Flip (that was stock music).
