Look Before You Leap or Sign that Receipt!

I just read Sussie Sutton's blog  "Look Before You Pay" and it reminded me of something that happened today.

Paying attention and studying a situation can save you lots of money.

In Sussie's blog, her friend could have saved himself lots of money if he had researched the property he intended to buy Before he bought it.

Today, I did save myself lots of money because I studied a bid (quote) for carpet I was about to purchase.  The lady at the floor covering store was selling me 700 square feet more than I needed and she knew it too.  Fortunately, I looked the quote over very well and added everything up Before I agreed to the cost.  That was when I found the 700 square foot mistake.  I brought it to her attention and she immediately made the adjustment.

She came back with an exact amount just like what I know the carpet layer had given her earlier in the day.  Seems she knew all along what amount I needed.  There is an old saying "Haste makes waste".  I know that is true.  Today, taking my time, I saved a lot of money.

Hi Ricki... nobody should ever be in such a rush to part with their hard earned money that they fail to read what they sign BEFORE signing it.

I'm not sure I would have completed the transaction knowing the vendor was trying to slip one by me.  If it was an honest mistake, no problem. Believing they were trying to increase the cost intentionally and needlessly --> I'm looking for another vendor I can trust and rely upon.

I have to agree with Mel and Gretchen. If it were on purpose, I'd pay more, to do business with someone that I can trust. So sorry that you had to experience this let down with them. :O(

I'm surprised you would reward them with your business fully believing they intended to deceive you.  It's people just like you that demonstrate to the takers that their deceit pays.  They didn't suffer any loss by attempting to steal from an unsuspecting client... and you did nothing to correct their future behavior... shame on you I have to say.

Thank you all for commenting.  The price I was getting here is just too good and of course, I'm in a hurry.  The carpet has to be installed this week and I did not have time or another source for the 50% discount I was getting.  It is unfortunate to have to do business with people like this but I see it everywhere especially in the construction business.  There is more of this going on than honesty.  If you work construction projects, you know it.  IF not, you don't.  So watch out!

Very true! I recently assisted a client in obtaining a bid for plumbing work. My client requested that I work with a particular company, but I advised them to seek a second bid from another reputable plumber. We began with my client's choice, and this plumber bid $1155. My choice for competing bid came in at $450. Needless to say, my client's were much more comfortable with the second bid, and the affordable plumber did a fantastic job. Shop and save!

Thanks David,  I apprecite the website.  Saving money is always a good thing.  I got a ridiculous bid tonight for a small job and I almost laughed at the guy.  He must think I dont know anything about construction. :)
