Florida Living: Gardening in Small Spaces
You don't need acreage or a small farm for gardening in Florida either for flowers or some fresh vegetables for the dinner table. Living in a warm climate in Florida, we are able to grow stuff almost year round!
Florida's climate can be a challenge to gardeners who moved here from the North where they are used to four distinct seasons. Strawberries ripen in February, Tomatoes should be planted early in the year, and you can even grow such exotic things such as Okra and Avocado.
My Hernando Beach backyard is not a very big one. Yet, one year, I grew a watermelon patch that gave me more than twenty watermelons, enough for the entire neighborhood. I have some banana trees that produce some small but delicious bananas almost every year.
This year, I planted just two tomato plants in one of the flower beds behind the house. Isn't it funny how you look forward to the first tomato from your own garden and then soon after they start producing more than you can keep up with? We've been eating tomatoes from these two plants for the last two or three weeks and now they are really starting to come in.
