The Emotional Roller Coaster

~ How Do You Handle the Emotional Roller Coaster? ~

In our business of real estate, we can go through a gamut of emotions, happiness, sadness, frustration, joy, disappointment, relief, rejection, fear (yes, fear) and sometimes nervousness all within a short time span, sometimes even within a matter of minutes.  It may even feel like a hormonal imbalance.

Have you ever ridden the roller coaster ride of emotions in a matter of just a few seconds?  How did you handle yourself?  Are you like the boiling tea kettle blowing your top?   Do you take it all in and bury your frustration?  Do you follow a 10 minute rule so as not to over react to a situation?  Do you say whatever comes to mind?  Do you respond differently to a client vs. another agent?  Or do you sit down, review the situation and try to resolve the problem?  Do you even know?

Often times disappointment can be hiding around the corner or lurking in the shadows just waiting to hit you by surprise.  It turns that corner when we least expect it or are able to handle the news gracefully.  In our industry, we need to be ready for whatever may come.  It's a juggling act; maintaining our calm demeanor while we get hit with, "I lost my job" a week before closing.  Or finding out that you didn't get the listing you worked so hard for.

I have been a marriage counselor, a financial, planner, a mother figure, a sister, a daughter, a cheerleader, a pillar of strength, the bearer of bad news and the hero of a transaction in the 18 years I have been a REALTOR(R).  I don't always get to choose the hat I wear, but I do try to stay in control of my emotions.

I enjoy roller coasters, but not emotional ones!

If you are interested in buying or selling real estate and you need a professional that can handle the ups and downs, Dawn Fabiszak is the one to call.  She has been a full time REALTOR(R) for over 18 years and will make sure you are happy and safe!  Call her today 303-332-8025

Dawn, that's one of the reasons I enjoy real estate - it's ever changing and the interpersonal with the clients.  I think the successes outweigh the losses because we know we did a great job.  And, if we learn from the downsides, then we constantly grown.  There are some things we can't control - losses of jobs, but so many things we can direct to a positive outcome.

We find that the emotional roller coaster extends to the rental side of the business also.  I actually wrote a blog, "Have you ever seen a Whale with a Polka Dot Tail" on this very topic.

This is the industry to be in if you like roller coasters.  I think the best way to keep from falling victim to the lows or downs that we all experience is to have a balance in your life.  Simply put, have a life outside of our business that you can escape to where things are normal.  I haven't been able to find that parallel universe yet but when you find it, please let me know so can escape for brief periods of time.  Thanks for the interesting post.

Dawn, I usually take a deep breath...and then another ..and then I try to  think of something else completely... like the choppy waves at the deserted New England beach. I try to envision the smell of the seaweed and  the golden sand blowing haphazardly in the wind. And miraculously the emotional roller coaster ride and anxiousness  seems to dissipate. Thanks for sharing!

Some deep thoughts for one to ponder

This business seems to be a never ending stream of emotional ups and downs.  There are times when I just have to take myself out of the situation to catch my breath.  There are others when I can make a quick decision and get things on track.  What I hate the most is when I get great news on minute followed by hours or days of uncertainty or failure.  Real estate is not for the weak.

Hello my dear. How do I handle it? Well, I remember that the definition of frustration is when something does not go as expected. So I try to keep that in mind that it's only my reaction and response to something that I am in control of.

Another thing I keep in mind is if I expel all my emotional energy and never give my energy meter a chance to build back up, then I have nothing more to expel if something more comes along. I do this spiritually, as you know, by keeping myself prayed up and ready. When my father-in-law went into the hospital several years ago everyone in the family panicked and were running around like crazy headless chickens. I somehow found the strength to power through the trial and remain calm, but by the time it was over, my meter had just about run out. I knew I was ready for whatever was to come but then needed to rebuild it after the incident. If we run around on empty all the time, we will expire and loose it when something REALLY big comes along.

If in our job descriptions all we mentioned was that we help people buy and sell homes, we'd only be doing a small fraction of all that we really do on a daily basis.

Dawn, funny that you should write this just now...I just ended one of those rides and I'm in the middle of one of one with a client now...the twists & turns, ups & downs seem to be coming by the minute.  Heavy drinking deep breathing usually works for me...I also have a heavy bag at my house that's in need of replacement.

This business is a roller coaster indeed.  We can't let our emotions rule us or we won't survive in it.  Our clients rely on us to be the rational ones.....

Michelle ~ on the emotional side, I don't like the drops, but on the actual ride, that is my favorite part!

Doug ~ balance helps tremendously, if you can find it.

Carlotta ~ I will try something like that...Denver doesn't have the water, but I'll find something.

You bet, James.

Bryan ~ unfortunately we cannot control the information we receive.

VB ~ ain't that the truth! ( love the mask)

Tammy ~ you are so right.  We always have to take a step back and replenish our energy supply.  Sometimes it is difficult to do.

Craig ~ it's unfortunate that the general public thinks our job is much easier than it is most times.

Nick ~ I love the actual roller coaster rides, that is when I decide to hop on it!  Lately it seems like more and more transactions are one long twisty, rocky and up and down rides!

Jane ~ rational and calm!
