Palm Beach County Parks-River Bend in Jupiter - A Multi-Historic Site !

Palm Beach County Parks- River Bend in Jupiter is also a multi-historic site just minutes away!

River Bend Park, Jupiter

A favorite spot for photographers, kayakers, canoeists , and hikers, River Bend Park is also a multi historic site.    Two battles of the Loxahatchee River took place here during the Seminole War in 1838.  There are battlefield reinactments as well as walking tours available.

But, evidence has been found of a continual time-line of pre-historic and historic habitation dating back to the Archaic Period, over 5000 years ago!

And if you're in the mood for some fun exercise, you can take a hike or bike ride through a protected (no cars) forest with well-marked paths.  If you get there early enough you might see some deer... if you're very quiet.  On recent visits, I've seen several sets of deer, wild turkey, sand-hill cranes and peacocks.

Interested in some water activity?  You can launch your own canoe or kayak or rent from Canoe Outfitters of Florida.     You can also rent bicycles if you don't have one of your own.  ($10/day for adults; $5 for children)  The trip along the Loxahatchee River, one of the prettiest around, takes you under a cypress canopy that wanders for 5 miles.  Check with the park and water conditions before you go.  There's a full river trip that can take 5-7 hours or a shorter one.

Did I mention horses??  There is a path for equestrians as well.  Just be sure to brin your own horse!

As you saw from my Generational Journey article, the Seminole Wars were something that are particularly fascinating to me. They found the journal of the 10 year old son who was part of that encounter and it was FASCINATING.  Can't imagine what it must have been like for the Seminoles as people started taking over their land.  That would be amazing to see a reinactment.

Kathy

There is a lot of history in Florida and it's very interesting in reading about the history.

Good luck and success.

Mimi- you know how hot and buggy it gets here in the summer.  Can you imagine Florida before AC?

Lou- I'd never thought of Florida as having as much interesting history as it does.  Most of what I've read has been about Mizner.

Kathy - River Bend Park has all my favorite activities: photography, kayaking, cannoning, and hiking! It's always great to learn about your area's history and you've done a great job with this post. Love you photo collage - really illustrates how beautiful and interesting the park is!
