Hyponatremia- what causes it? How to avoid it.

Water is essential to everything in life, and it is very important to stay hydrated in the water dropssummer heat; but can too much water be dangerous? Too much water without replenishing the sodium in your body can cause Hyponatremia.  What is Hyponatremia? We all know what it is but maybe never heard it's official name. It’s a lower than normal level of sodium in your blood. Sodium regulates the blood pressure and helps control the fluid balance in your body.

Over-doing the drinking of plain water can cause hyponatremia,  or water intoxication as it is also called, which is a serious condition where blood sodium levels drop precipitously. This can be caused by sweating excessively over several hours and drinking water during intense sports activity. Drinking sports drinks that replenish sodium in your system is a way to avoid Hyponatremia. Symptoms include confusion, disorientation, weakness and nausea which can lead to seizures, coma and death without prompt medical attention.

Blood sodium levels can be also be lowered by medications that you may be taking like diuretics; of course, your doctor will be monitoring those levels for you.

Although it is important to stay hydrated and water will work for most of us doing our regular activities, when you or your kids are doing intense sports activities-drink a sodium replenishing sports drink too. Then you won't be a victim of hyponatremia.

Hi Toni, I came over from Roy's reblog and just wanted to comment.

Hyponatremia can be a fairly rare condition.  It used to be thought that when it got really hot, water, along with salt tablets would help.  However, further research indicated that we get plenty of replenishment of salt in our regular diets.  Sports drinks are good replacements if you work out (very) heavily.  They say on average, though, that the average person does not expend enough electrolytes (salt being one), during a normal workout to need sports drinks and if you replace water entirely with them, this can actually be harmful (especially for the kiddos).

Good ole H2O is still good for you :).  However, you are right that you can, just like anything, go overboard with it.

Roy - thank you.

Brenda - I think I said that ordinary everyday activities do not require us to do anything other than water. However in Florida with the heat and humidity, this can be a problem with sports outside. And, I don't think I said that water wasn't good for you. The point is that too much water without a replenishment can be a problem.

Toni- great information.  I worked with someone once who really did over do it with the water.  Her doctor had to tell her to dial it down.
