We at Design To Market LLC have been staging homes in Greater Cincinnati since 2004.  We are asked repeatedly where we keep our inventory and how we manage to stay on top of the demands of managing these items.

The answer to this question has been an evolving response that started with a crowded basement and a 10 x 10 storage unit.  Today we are the proud owners of a "well-oiled" 4,000 square foot warehouse that serves as command central for the projects that we implement on a daily basis.  Our ability to respond to the breadth of projects we implement with a speed that can make the typical homeowners head spin is driven by good designers and the materials that make it all come together.

We look forward to sharing additional glimpses into the world of Design To Market's warehouse in future blog release.

I am not inately organized!  We struggled a lot with organization before setting up the "system" to keep it up.  If it is easy to put things away...you'll put them away.

Hi Jo...you're warehouse looks great! I agree with you on if its easy to put things away, you'll put them away! I have a open shelving concept myself...I'm so visual so I've found that being able to see it all and shop it works really well. (and putting it away is simple too!)

Wow!  We talk about the day we will have a warehouse.  This gives me hope!  Thanks for posting this.  It looks so organized and professional.

Your warehouse is fabulous!!!!!  I want to be like you when I grow up :)  I know that you've been in business in 2004, but how long did it take you to build up your inventory?

Hi Jo, this a glorious space.  I want to come shopping because there are quite a few items I covet.  What a wonderful place to work out of.  Betty

In answer to Teresa's question, we have built our inventory steadily since 2005 when we first decided to provide an in-house rental solution.  We have built the inventory based on the needs of the local market and our specific client environments.

Jo, thank you for shring your warehouse with us. It's very impressive! One of the tricks I use for pillow storage is clear lawn bags. I can see what I have and protect them from the dust too.

Jo,  Your warehouse is inspirational!  How do you store area rugs, by the way?  Your ideas are wonderful and we'd love to see more photos -- thank you for sharing.

Maureen, I continue to find area rugs to be quite a challenge.  At this point we have them rolled up and laying on pallets.  I would love to have something that hangs them like rug stores but it would be difficult to build and it would potentially be hard to load.  Until a better idea comes along we will use the pallets.  I am open to ideas!

Marci,  It does take a little more work to make yourself "clean up" after job pick ups but it is soooo much easier to source for new jobs!

Jo: I am currently moving into my new warehouse. It is a huge undertaking. I went back to review your photos to see if I could learn something more from you and of course I did. I have all my throw pillows in big clear plastic bins. Do you find that the pillows on shelves like you have them get dusty? That is one of my big worries. I though I held the record on metal shelving, but you have me beat by a mile. You are an inspiration, my dear.

I know the dust thing is a huge issue but to be honest, I have had my pillows arranged in this fashion for over 6 months and have not had a problem.  They at least get some cover from the shelves above.  I find it is SO much easier when we are sourcing for a job.

My recent blog post Why Stage It now?  Tales of a family room redo for example was a small job with a need for 10 pillows!  Because the pillows were so visible we were able to quickly pull the pillows for the rooms in need.   I guess I would say the risk of a little dust has been minimal when compared to our newfound pillow efficiency!

Oh, I want this space so badly!!  And all the stuff in it, mind you!  Now if it could just be attached to my garage so that I don't have to go anywhere.....

Jo, you are an inspiration.

Jo: I will have to see if I can rework my pillow area. I like the idea of having them exposed also, but my shelving is set up for bins, so I will have to redo it, me thinks.

I love this warehouse set up.  I'm looking for a larger space now and want to clone yours!  It's perfect, but I don't quite need 4000 sq ft so hopefully I'll find another stager to share with. Thanks for the photos!

Maureen,  We started much smaller 3 years ago with a 10' x 10' storage unit.  It worked well for us to grow into our size!  I would just recommend calling "for lease" signs whenever the space looks good.  My warehouse is 10 minutes from my home in a spot I never new existed until I called to ask about a sign they had posted.

As an update to our warehouse scenario, we have begun to really feel the benefits of making the right investment of both time and money on well-designed and scalable storage solutions.  We all feel the eb and flow of in-house inventory.  I can not reiterate enough the importance of being able to handle the peaks and valleys with a flexible warehouse solution.
